USB Not Detected / Not Recognized by PC
HP HP Calculator
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
An HP calculator not detected via USB is usually caused by a missing USB driver on Windows, or a cable that is charge-only rather than data-capable. Install the HP Connectivity Kit (for HP 50g) or HP Prime Virtual Calculator (for HP Prime) on your PC — these install the necessary drivers automatically.
Affected Models
- HP Prime G1
- HP Prime G2
- HP 50g
- HP 48GX
Common Causes
- HP USB driver not installed on the PC
- USB cable is charge-only — no data lines connected
- Calculator firmware outdated — older firmware uses different USB descriptors
- USB port on the PC is USB 3.0 and incompatible with older HP USB implementation
- Windows requires driver signing and HP driver is not signed (older systems)
How to Fix It
-
Install the correct HP software and driver.
For HP Prime: download HP Prime Virtual Calculator from the HP website — it installs the HID USB driver for the Prime. For HP 50g: download the HP Connectivity Kit from hp.com/support. These tools install the USB drivers that Windows needs to recognise HP calculators.
-
Use a data-capable USB cable.
Many USB cables sold as chargers have only the power pins connected and no data lines. Use the original HP cable if available, or a USB cable you know transfers data (such as one used successfully with a phone or other device). Test by using the cable with another known-good device.
-
Try a USB 2.0 port instead of USB 3.0.
Some HP calculators, particularly the HP 50g, use a USB 1.1 implementation that can have compatibility issues with USB 3.0 ports. Try connecting to a USB 2.0 port (usually coloured black or white, not the blue USB 3.0 ports). A USB 2.0 hub also works.
-
Update the HP Prime firmware.
Older HP Prime G1 firmware versions use a different USB device class that is harder for modern PCs to detect. With the calculator connected, the HP Prime Virtual Calculator software will update the firmware automatically. After the update, USB detection is significantly more reliable.
-
Check Device Manager for driver errors.
On Windows, right-click the Start button > Device Manager. Look for an Unknown Device or a device with a yellow warning triangle under the Universal Serial Bus section. Right-click it > Update Driver > Search automatically. If found, this will install or update the HP calculator driver without manual software installation.
When to Call a Professional
If the calculator is detected by the PC but consistently disconnects during data transfer, the USB port solder joint on the calculator PCB may be cracked and needs professional repair.
