Apps Not Loading

Texas Instruments TI-84 Calculator

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

TI-84 apps not loading after a TI OS update means the apps were not removed but have become incompatible with the new OS version, or the apps memory space was cleared during the update. Reinstall apps via TI Connect CE — download the app files (.8ek or .8xk) from the TI website and send them to the calculator.

Affected Models

  • TI-84 Plus CE
  • TI-84 Plus CE-T
  • TI-84 Plus Silver Edition
  • TI-84 Plus

Common Causes

  • OS update cleared the applications — some OS updates include a flash memory reset
  • App is incompatible with the new OS version — a newer version of the app is needed
  • Application is archived but appears in the Apps menu as non-functional
  • App file corrupted during transfer — needs to be retransferred
  • App requires features present in older OS versions that have changed

How to Fix It

  1. Check which apps are currently installed.

Press the APPS key. All installed apps appear in the list. If the list is shorter than before the update, some apps were removed during the OS update. Note which apps are missing.

  2. Download the latest versions from the TI website.

Go to education.ti.com → Resources → Apps for TI-84 Plus CE (or your model). Download the .8ek or .8xk file for each missing app. TI provides most standard apps for free.

  3. Install TI Connect CE on your computer.

TI Connect CE (free from the TI website) is the tool for transferring files to TI-84 calculators. Connect the calculator via USB cable. Open TI Connect CE → Actions → Send File to Device, and select the downloaded .8ek or .8xk app files.

  4. Transfer the app files to the calculator.

With TI Connect CE open and the calculator connected, drag the app files into the 'Calculator Explorer' panel or use Send File to Device. After the transfer completes, press APPS on the calculator to confirm the app appears in the list.

  5. Try running the app from the APPS menu.

Press APPS, scroll to the reinstalled app and press ENTER. If it opens normally, the reinstall was successful. If it shows an error about OS compatibility, check the TI website for an updated version that supports the current OS.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does updating the TI-84 Plus CE OS delete my programs?

Updating the OS may or may not clear programs depending on the update type. Programs in flash archive are generally preserved, but programs in RAM may be cleared. Always back up programs via TI Connect CE before performing an OS update.

Where can I find the TI-84 OS version I am running?

Press 2nd → MEM → 1: About. The current OS version is shown on screen, along with the RAM and archive memory available. Compare this to the current version on the TI website to determine if an update is available.
