Not Turning On

Texas Instruments TI-84 Calculator

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

TI-84 not turning on is almost always caused by dead or incorrectly installed batteries, or the screen contrast being set too dark. Replace all four AAA batteries with fresh ones and try pressing ON. If the calculator turns on but the screen is blank, hold the ON button and press the up arrow key to increase contrast.

Affected Models

  • TI-84 Plus
  • TI-84 Plus Silver Edition
  • TI-84 Plus CE (rechargeable)
  • TI-84 Plus CE-T
  • TI-83 Plus

Common Causes

  • All four AAA batteries dead — the most common cause by far
  • One or more batteries installed backwards — check polarity markings
  • Battery contacts corroded — preventing electrical contact
  • Screen contrast set to minimum — screen appears blank but calculator is on
  • TI-84 Plus CE battery fully discharged and needs to charge before use

How to Fix It

  1. Replace all four AAA batteries.

The TI-84 Plus uses 4 x AAA batteries. Open the battery cover on the back (slide it down). Install four fresh alkaline batteries, checking that each one matches the +/- diagram in the battery compartment. Press ON.

  2. Check for a blank screen — adjust contrast.

If the calculator turns on but the screen is black or blank, the contrast may be set wrong. Press and HOLD the ON button, then press the UP arrow key (2nd + UP) repeatedly to increase contrast. Press ON + DOWN to decrease contrast if the screen is too dark.

  3. Check battery polarity and contacts.

Ensure each battery is oriented correctly — positive (+) end facing the spring side. Inspect the battery contacts (metal strips in the compartment) for white corrosion or discolouration. Clean contacts with a pencil eraser and dry cloth.

  4. Charge the TI-84 Plus CE via USB.

The TI-84 Plus CE has a built-in rechargeable battery instead of AA batteries. Connect it to a computer or wall charger using the included mini-USB cable. A blinking battery icon on the screen means it is charging. Charge for at least 1 hour before testing.

  5. Remove the backup battery (TI-84 Plus).

The TI-84 Plus has a small round backup battery (CR1616) in addition to the 4 AAA batteries. This is located under a small cover near the main batteries. If the main batteries died for a long period, replacing the backup cell can sometimes help restore normal start-up.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do TI-84 Plus batteries last?

With normal classroom use, four AAA batteries in a TI-84 Plus typically last 2–4 months. Leaving the calculator unused for a year often results in drained batteries. Always use fresh alkaline batteries — rechargeable batteries have a lower voltage that can cause erratic behaviour.

Can battery corrosion permanently damage a TI-84?

If battery acid has leaked onto the PCB contacts (not just the battery compartment), it can cause permanent damage. Clean the battery compartment contacts with a cotton swab dipped in white vinegar, then dry thoroughly. If the corrosion has spread to the circuit board, professional repair is needed.
