ERR 02
Canon DSLR Camera
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
ERR 02 means the camera cannot read or write to the memory card. The card may be corrupted, full, locked, or incompatible. Try formatting the card in the camera or using a different card.
Affected Models
- Canon EOS Rebel series
- Canon EOS 5D
- Canon EOS 6D
- Canon EOS R series
- Most Canon cameras
Common Causes
- Memory card corrupted
- Card not fully inserted
- Card lock switch is in the locked position (SD cards)
- Card is full — no space remaining
- Incompatible or counterfeit memory card
- Card reader contacts in the camera are dirty
How to Fix It
-
Remove and reinsert the memory card firmly.
Make sure the card clicks fully into place. A partially inserted card cannot be read.
-
Check the lock switch on SD cards.
SD cards have a small sliding switch on the left side. If it is in the Lock position, the camera cannot write to the card. Slide it up.
-
Format the card in the camera (not on a computer).
Menu > Setup > Format card. WARNING: this deletes all photos on the card. Copy them to a computer first.
-
Try a different memory card.
If a known-good card works, the original card is faulty or counterfeit. Use name-brand cards (SanDisk, Lexar, Sony) from reputable sellers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I format the card in the camera instead of on a computer?
Cameras create a specific folder structure on the card. Formatting in the camera ensures the correct structure is created. Formatting on a computer may create a format the camera does not understand.
Can I recover photos from a corrupted card?
Often yes. Software like Recuva, PhotoRec, or Disk Drill can recover photos from corrupted cards. Do not format the card until you have attempted recovery.
