ERR 30

Canon DSLR Camera

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

ERR 30 means the shutter mechanism has malfunctioned. The shutter could not complete its opening and closing cycle. This is a serious mechanical error — the shutter may be nearing end of life or may have a physical obstruction.

Affected Models

  • Canon EOS Rebel series
  • Canon EOS 5D
  • Canon EOS 6D
  • Canon EOS 7D
  • Canon EOS 90D
  • Most Canon DSLRs

Common Causes

  • Shutter blades worn out after reaching their rated lifespan
  • Shutter blade stuck due to lubrication failure
  • Physical damage to shutter mechanism from impact
  • Shutter motor failure
  • Debris interfering with shutter movement

How to Fix It

  1. Turn the camera off and on — sometimes the shutter resets.

A temporary shutter jam can sometimes clear with a power cycle. If ERR 30 returns on the next shot, the problem is persistent.

  2. Remove the lens and gently inspect the shutter curtain.

With the lens off, look inside the mirror box. Do NOT touch the shutter curtain — it is extremely delicate.

  3. Check your shutter count to see if it is near the rated lifespan.

Use a tool like ShutterCount or check EXIF data. Entry-level DSLRs are rated for ~100,000 actuations. Pro bodies for 300,000+.

  4. The shutter needs professional replacement.

Shutter replacement is a common repair. Cost is typically $200-$400 including labour.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a Canon shutter last?

Canon rates their shutters at 100,000 actuations (Rebel/xxxD), 150,000 (xxD), or 300,000+ (5D, 1DX). Many shutters last well beyond their rating, but some fail earlier.

Is it worth repairing vs buying a new camera?

Depends on the camera model. A $300 shutter repair on a $2,000 body makes sense. On an entry-level body worth $400, you might consider a replacement instead.
