ERR 60

Canon DSLR Camera

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

ERR 60 means the camera's image sensor or its supporting circuitry has a problem. The sensor cannot capture the image properly. Turn off the camera, remove the battery, wait 30 seconds, and try again.

Affected Models

  • Canon EOS Rebel series
  • Canon EOS 5D
  • Canon EOS 6D
  • Canon EOS R series
  • Most Canon cameras

Common Causes

  • Temporary sensor communication error
  • Sensor overheating from prolonged live view or video
  • Sensor cleaning mechanism stuck
  • Sensor hardware failure
  • Dust on sensor causing read errors (rare)

How to Fix It

  1. Remove the battery, wait 30 seconds, reinsert and power on.

Most ERR 60 occurrences are temporary and clear with a full reset.

  2. If shooting video or live view: let the camera cool down.

Extended live view or 4K video heats the sensor. Let the camera rest for 10-15 minutes.

  3. Run the sensor cleaning function.

Menu > Setup > Sensor cleaning > Clean now. A stuck cleaning mechanism can trigger ERR 60.

  4. If persistent, the sensor or its circuit board needs professional inspection.

Sensor replacement is expensive ($500+) but is sometimes the only fix for persistent ERR 60.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I damage the sensor by shooting in hot weather?

Not from normal shooting. But extended live view or video in extreme heat can overheat the sensor. The camera will display a temperature warning before damage occurs.

Is sensor replacement worth it?

For high-end bodies (5D, R5, R6), yes. For entry-level bodies, sensor replacement often costs more than a replacement camera.
