ERR 70

Canon Camera

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

ERR 70 means the image processor encountered an error while processing the captured image. This could be a temporary buffer overflow during burst shooting, or a hardware fault. Turn off the camera, remove the battery, wait 30 seconds, then try again.

Affected Models

  • Canon EOS Rebel series
  • Canon EOS 5D
  • Canon EOS R series
  • Canon EOS 90D
  • Most Canon cameras

Common Causes

  • Image buffer overflow from rapid burst shooting
  • Memory card too slow for the shooting speed
  • Image processor overheating
  • DIGIC processor hardware failure
  • Firmware bug

How to Fix It

  1. Stop burst shooting and let the camera process the buffer.

If shooting rapid bursts, the image buffer fills up. Wait for the card access light to stop blinking before shooting more.

  2. Use a faster memory card.

Slow cards cannot keep up with burst shooting. Use a UHS-II or CFexpress card rated for your camera's maximum write speed.

  3. Remove the battery for 30 seconds and reinsert.

This resets the image processor and clears the buffer.

  4. Update firmware to the latest version.

Image processing bugs are sometimes fixed in firmware updates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a slow card cause ERR 70?

Yes. If the card cannot write data fast enough during burst shooting, the buffer overflows. Check your camera's recommended card speed.

What is the image buffer?

The buffer is fast temporary memory where images are held before being written to the card. When it fills up, the camera must wait for the card to catch up.
