Lens Error

Canon Digital Camera

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

A Canon lens error means the camera's lens mechanism is stuck, jammed with debris, or has encountered a mechanical failure. It appears most often on PowerShot compact cameras when the retractable lens can't extend or retract properly.

Affected Models

  • Canon PowerShot SX series
  • Canon PowerShot G series
  • Canon ELPH series
  • Canon EOS M series

Common Causes

  • Lens jammed by sand, dust, or grit entering the barrel
  • Lens dropped or knocked while extended — physical misalignment
  • Low battery during lens movement — motor stalled mid-travel
  • Lens mechanism worn out after years of use
  • Camera turned on/off rapidly causing incomplete lens cycle
  • Moisture inside the lens barrel

How to Fix It

  1. Turn the camera off and on again.

Press the power button to turn off, wait 10 seconds, then turn on again. Sometimes the lens self-corrects on the next startup attempt. Repeat 2–3 times before trying other steps.

  2. Remove the battery, wait 30 seconds, and reinsert.

A full power drain resets the lens motor controller. Make sure the battery is fully charged before retrying — a weak battery during lens movement is a common cause of this error.

  3. Gently tap the camera body.

With the camera off, hold it lens-down and give it a very gentle tap on a soft surface. This can dislodge minor debris or realign a slightly off-track lens barrel. Do not tap hard — this is a last resort for stuck debris, not a fix for physical damage.

  4. Use compressed air around the lens barrel.

With the lens extended (turn on the camera quickly), use a can of compressed air around the seam of the lens barrel. Sand or fine grit jammed in the barrel is a very common cause in beach and outdoor settings.

  5. Have the camera serviced.

If none of the above works, the lens mechanism requires professional service. Canon authorised repair centres can clean, realign, or replace the lens assembly. For older or lower-value cameras, replacement may be more cost-effective than repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fix a Canon lens error myself?

For debris-related lens errors, yes — compressed air, gentle tapping, and battery resets resolve a significant portion of cases. For physical damage (dropped camera) or worn-out mechanisms, professional repair is needed. Attempting to manually force the lens can cause further damage and is not recommended.
