EVF Not Working
Fujifilm Camera
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
A Fujifilm EVF (electronic viewfinder) that shows nothing or switches off unexpectedly is usually caused by the eye sensor being blocked or dirty, the viewfinder mode being set to LCD-only, or the eye sensor being confused by light reflections. Cover the small eye sensor next to the viewfinder eyepiece with your finger — if the EVF activates, the sensor is the issue.
Affected Models
- Fujifilm X-T4
- Fujifilm X-T5
- Fujifilm X-T30 II
- Fujifilm X-H2
- Fujifilm X-H2S
- Fujifilm X100VI
Common Causes
- Eye sensor is being confused by ambient light or a reflective surface and thinks an eye is present
- Display mode is set to LCD only — EVF is disabled
- Eye sensor proximity detector is dirty
- EVF display has failed (hardware)
How to Fix It
-
Press the DISP/BACK button to cycle through display modes. One of the modes will show EVF only, another shows the LCD, and another switches between them automatically.
If you are in LCD-only mode, the EVF appears blank regardless of the eye sensor. Cycling through DISP modes is the fastest fix.
-
Check the display switch mode setting: Menu > Screen Setting > EVF / LCD Automatic Switch. Set it to Auto Switching so the eye sensor activates the EVF when you raise the camera to your eye.
-
Clean the small eye sensor next to the EVF eyepiece with a dry cotton swab. Dirt or smudges on the sensor can confuse it — it may think your eye is always present, keeping the LCD off, or never present, keeping the EVF off.
-
If the EVF activates with the DISP button but the auto-switching does not work, the eye proximity sensor may be faulty. Check the camera under bright light and see if the sensor seems to be permanently triggered.
Wearing sunglasses or shooting in very bright sunlight can confuse the eye sensor. In these conditions, manually lock the display to EVF using the DISP button.
Frequently Asked Questions
My Fujifilm EVF shows fine but has a green or purple tint — is that normal?
A slight colour cast in the EVF is normal and varies between OLED EVF units. However, a strong persistent tint in specific areas can indicate an ageing OLED panel. Fujifilm OLED EVFs are rated for approximately 10,000 hours of use — if the tint appeared suddenly, contact Fujifilm service.
