Face Detection Not Working

Fujifilm Camera

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Fujifilm face and eye detection not tracking subjects is almost always caused by the AF Mode not being set to a compatible mode, the Face/Eye detection setting being turned off, or shooting conditions where detection is limited (very dim light, face at extreme angle, or face partially obscured). Set AF Mode to Wide/Tracking, then enable Face/Eye Detection in the autofocus menu.

Affected Models

  • Fujifilm X-T4
  • Fujifilm X-T5
  • Fujifilm X-H2
  • Fujifilm X-H2S
  • Fujifilm X-S10
  • Fujifilm X100VI

Common Causes

  • Face/Eye Detection is disabled in the autofocus settings menu
  • AF Mode is set to Single Point or Zone rather than Wide/Tracking
  • Subject face is turned too far away from the camera for detection
  • Low light is below the face detection threshold
  • Firmware is outdated — Fujifilm has improved face detection significantly in firmware updates

How to Fix It

  1. Set AF Mode to Wide/Tracking by pressing the AF Mode button (or via Menu > AF/MF Settings > AF Mode). Face/Eye detection only works in Wide or Tracking AF mode — it is not available in Single Point or Zone modes.

This is the most common reason face detection appears broken — the AF mode selector was inadvertently changed.

  2. Enable Face/Eye Detection: Menu > AF/MF Settings > Face/Eye Detection Setting > Face and Eye Detection AF. Set to On.

On X-H2 and X-H2S, you can also choose between Face Priority, Right Eye Priority, and Left Eye Priority.

  3. Check that the firmware is up to date. Go to fujifilm-x.com/support and download the latest firmware for your camera. Fujifilm has dramatically improved face and eye detection tracking in recent firmware releases.

Some X-T4 and X-S10 firmware updates have added subject tracking improvements that were not present at launch.

  4. In low-light conditions, face detection performance degrades below EV 1. Use autofocus assist light if the subject is close, or accept that zone AF may be more reliable in very dim scenes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Fujifilm cameras track animals and other subjects, not just faces?

Yes — the X-H2, X-H2S, and X-T5 include subject recognition that can detect and track animals, birds, cars, motorcycles, and aeroplanes in addition to human faces. Subject detection is enabled in Menu > AF/MF Settings > Subject Detection Setting.
