Overheating / Temperature Warning

GoPro Action Camera

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

GoPro overheating happens during extended recording, especially at high resolutions in warm conditions. The camera shuts down to protect itself. Reduce resolution, remove the case, and keep it out of direct sunlight.

Affected Models

  • GoPro HERO 13
  • GoPro HERO 12
  • GoPro HERO 11
  • GoPro HERO 10
  • GoPro HERO 9

Common Causes

  • Extended 4K/5.3K recording in warm weather
  • Camera in a waterproof case trapping heat
  • Direct sunlight on the camera
  • GPS and WiFi active while recording
  • Battery generating heat during fast charging

How to Fix It

  1. Remove any case or housing to improve airflow.

Waterproof cases trap heat. Use the camera without a case when possible.

  2. Lower the recording resolution.

5.3K and 4K/120fps generate the most heat. 1080p runs much cooler and records for much longer.

  3. Keep the camera out of direct sunlight.

A white cloth or shade cover can reduce heat absorption significantly.

  4. Turn off GPS, WiFi, and the front screen.

Each active feature generates heat. Disable what you do not need.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can I record 4K before overheating?

In moderate temperatures (20-25°C): 45-90 minutes depending on the model. In hot conditions (35°C+): sometimes as little as 20-30 minutes.

Does the GoPro overheat underwater?

Less likely. Water acts as a coolant. Overheating is mainly a problem in air, especially on hot days.
