Battery Exhausted

Nikon DSLR / Mirrorless Camera

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Nikon's 'Battery exhausted' message means the battery charge has dropped below the minimum level needed to operate the camera. In most cases, charging the battery fully resolves it. The message can also appear with degraded or third-party batteries.

Affected Models

  • Nikon D3500
  • Nikon D5600
  • Nikon D7500
  • Nikon D850
  • Nikon Z5
  • Nikon Z6 II
  • Nikon Z7 II

Common Causes

  • Battery genuinely depleted — needs charging
  • Battery aged and no longer holds full charge
  • Third-party battery not compatible or not reporting charge correctly
  • Cold weather — lithium batteries lose capacity in the cold
  • Battery not seated correctly
  • Dirty battery contacts

How to Fix It

  1. Charge the battery fully.

Use the Nikon MH-series charger that came with the camera. Allow a complete charge — until the charger indicator shows full. Avoid using third-party USB chargers that may not charge to the correct voltage.

  2. Clean the battery contacts.

Wipe the gold contacts on the battery and inside the camera battery compartment with a dry cotton swab. Oxidation on the contacts causes the camera to read a lower voltage than the battery actually holds.

  3. Warm the battery if shooting in cold weather.

Lithium batteries can lose 40–60% of their effective capacity at temperatures below 0°C. Keep a spare battery in an inside pocket close to your body to keep it warm. Swap batteries if performance drops in the cold.

  4. Test with a known-good Nikon battery.

If you have access to a genuine Nikon EN-EL14a, EN-EL15c, or the model-appropriate battery, test it. If it works, the original battery has failed. Nikon batteries typically last 3–5 years or 500 charge cycles.

  5. Replace third-party batteries with genuine Nikon batteries.

Many non-genuine batteries underperform and trigger false exhausted warnings. Nikon cameras have a battery authentication system that may reject or flag non-genuine batteries. Genuine Nikon batteries are the most reliable option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Nikon say battery exhausted when the battery is charged?

If the battery was just charged and the camera still reports it as exhausted, the battery has likely degraded and can no longer hold a charge above the camera's minimum threshold. This is common after 2–3 years of regular use. Check the battery info screen (Menu → Setup → Battery Info) if available — a battery health below 75% indicates it is time to replace it.
