CHA / CHR

Nikon Camera

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

CHA means a problem with the memory card in Slot A. CHR means a problem with the card being read. The card may not be inserted, may be locked, corrupted, or incompatible. Remove and reinsert the card, or try a different card.

Affected Models

  • Nikon D850
  • Nikon D780
  • Nikon D500
  • Nikon Z6
  • Nikon Z7
  • Nikon Z8
  • Nikon Z9

Common Causes

  • No card inserted in the active slot
  • Card not fully seated in the slot
  • Card lock switch is in the locked position
  • Card corrupted or incompatible
  • Card contacts dirty

How to Fix It

  1. Make sure a card is inserted in the correct slot.

Dual-slot cameras may be set to write to a specific slot. Check which slot is active in the menu.

  2. Remove and reinsert the card firmly.

Push the card in until it clicks. A partially inserted card cannot be read.

  3. Check the SD card lock switch.

The small switch on the left side of SD cards must be in the unlocked position.

  4. Format the card in the camera.

Menu > Setup > Format memory card. This erases all data — copy photos to a computer first.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between CHA and CHR?

CHA specifically refers to Slot A (the first card slot). CHR is a read error — the camera found a card but cannot read its data.

Can I use microSD cards with an adapter?

Technically yes, but adapters can cause contact issues. For reliability, use full-size SD cards or the card type your camera requires.
