Folder contains no images
Nikon Camera
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
This message means the camera is looking at a folder on the memory card that has no photos in it. Your photos may be in a different folder, or the card may be empty. Check the playback folder setting or browse all folders.
Affected Models
- All Nikon cameras
Common Causes
- Camera set to play back from a specific folder that is empty
- Photos were deleted or moved to a computer
- Memory card is genuinely empty — no photos taken yet
- Card was formatted (all photos erased)
- Photos are in a different folder created by another camera
How to Fix It
-
Change the playback folder to All.
Menu > Playback > Playback folder > All. This shows photos from all folders, not just the currently selected one.
-
Check if photos exist by putting the card in a computer.
Use a card reader to browse the DCIM folder on the card. Photos may be in a subfolder the camera is not looking at.
-
If photos were deleted: try photo recovery software.
Deleted photos can often be recovered if the card has not been formatted or overwritten.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my camera create multiple folders?
Nikon cameras create a new folder after 9,999 images or when the folder number is manually changed. Multiple folders can exist on one card.
Can photos from another camera brand be viewed?
Sometimes, but not always. The Nikon may not recognize JPEG files created by other brands in certain colour spaces or folder structures.
