Image cannot be saved

Nikon Camera

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

This error means the camera captured an image but could not write it to the memory card. The card may be full, locked, corrupted, or too slow. Check the card space and try a different card.

Affected Models

  • All Nikon cameras

Common Causes

  • Memory card is full — no space remaining
  • Card lock switch is in the locked position
  • Card write error — corrupted file system
  • Card too slow for the image size (especially RAW or burst shooting)
  • Card removed while camera was writing

How to Fix It

  1. Check remaining card space — look at the shot counter in the viewfinder.

If it shows 0, the card is full. Delete unwanted photos or insert a fresh card.

  2. Check the SD card lock switch.

Slide the switch to the unlocked position (up).

  3. Try a different memory card.

If a known-good card works, the original card is faulty.

  4. Format the card in the camera.

Menu > Setup > Format memory card. Copy photos off first — formatting erases everything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did I lose the photo?

If the error appeared immediately after shooting, the photo was likely not saved. The image in the buffer is lost once the camera moves on.

Can a slow card cause this error?

Yes, especially during burst shooting. If the card cannot keep up with the data flow, writes can fail. Use a card rated for your camera's maximum write speed.
