Focus Error

Panasonic Digital Camera / Mirrorless

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A Panasonic Lumix focus error means the camera's autofocus system cannot complete a focus operation. The most common causes are the lens AF/MF switch being set to manual, shooting in conditions too dark for AF, or dirty lens contacts.

Affected Models

  • Panasonic Lumix S5 II
  • Panasonic Lumix S1
  • Panasonic Lumix GH6
  • Panasonic Lumix GH5
  • Panasonic Lumix G9
  • Panasonic Lumix GX series
  • Panasonic Lumix FZ series

Common Causes

  • Lens AF/MF switch set to MF (Manual Focus)
  • Scene too dark or lacking contrast for AF
  • Subject too close — below the lens minimum focus distance
  • Dirty contacts between lens and camera body
  • Lens firmware out of date
  • Incorrect AF area mode selected

How to Fix It

  1. Check the AF/MF switch on the lens.

Most Panasonic and Leica Lumix lenses have a small AF/MF switch on the barrel. Ensure it is in the AF position. If set to MF, the camera will never autofocus regardless of the camera body settings.

  2. Check autofocus settings on the camera.

Even if the lens is set to AF, the camera body may have AF locked off. On Lumix cameras, verify the AF mode is set via the joystick or touch screen — make sure an AF point is selected, not Manual Focus mode. Also check that no custom button has been mapped to AF/MF toggle and accidentally activated MF.

  3. Clean the lens contacts.

Turn off the camera and remove the lens. Use a clean, dry cotton swab to gently clean the gold contacts on the rear of the lens and inside the camera mount. Dirty contacts prevent AF command signals from reaching the lens motor, causing focus errors.

  4. Improve lighting or use AF assist.

Panasonic Lumix cameras, especially Micro Four Thirds models, can struggle to focus in very low light. Enable the AF Assist lamp in the menu (it fires the built-in flash in a short AF pre-burst to illuminate the subject). Alternatively, point the AF point at an area with strong contrast or texture to help the system find focus.

  5. Update lens and body firmware.

Panasonic releases firmware updates that improve AF performance, especially for newer L-mount lenses on S-series cameras. Check panasonic.net/cns/sav/support/ for the latest firmware for your camera body and lens. Lens firmware is updated through the camera body while the lens is mounted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Panasonic Lumix keep hunting for focus?

Focus hunting (the lens continuously searching without locking) on a Panasonic Lumix is caused by insufficient contrast or light for the contrast-detection or phase-detection AF to work with. Switch to a single AF point, point at a high-contrast edge of your subject (not a flat, featureless area), and half-press the shutter. For moving subjects, switch to Continuous AF (AFC) mode so the camera tracks rather than trying to snap-focus on each half-press.
