Overheating During Video

Panasonic Camera

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Overheating during video means the camera's processor is generating too much heat during recording. The camera will shut down recording to protect itself. Lower the recording resolution, use an external recorder, or add a cooling fan.

Affected Models

  • Panasonic Lumix S5
  • Panasonic Lumix GH6
  • Panasonic Lumix G9 II
  • Panasonic Lumix cameras during 4K+ recording

Common Causes

  • Extended 4K/6K recording in warm conditions
  • High bitrate recording (400Mbps+)
  • Direct sunlight on the camera body
  • LCD screen heat adding to internal temperature
  • No airflow around the camera

How to Fix It

  1. Lower the recording resolution or frame rate.

    4K 30fps generates less heat than 4K 60fps. 1080p runs much cooler than 4K.

  2. Use an external recorder via HDMI.

Offloading recording to an Atomos or similar reduces internal heat. The camera just sends an HDMI signal.

  3. Add a small USB fan or cooling accessory.

Aftermarket cooling fans attach to the hot shoe. They significantly extend recording time.

  4. Keep the camera out of direct sunlight.

Shade or a white cover over the body reduces heat absorption.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can the GH6 record 4K?

The GH6 has a built-in fan and can record 4K indefinitely. The S5 (without fan) may overheat after 20-30 minutes in warm conditions.

Does the fan make noise?

The GH6's built-in fan is very quiet — barely audible. External USB fans can be noisier. Use them for situations where audio is not critical.
