Lens Not Attached

Sony Camera

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Lens Not Attached means the Sony camera cannot communicate with the lens. The most common cause is the lens not being fully locked, dirty contacts, or an adapter issue with third-party lenses.

Affected Models

  • Sony A7 IV
  • Sony A7C II
  • Sony A7R V
  • Sony A6700
  • Sony A9 III
  • Sony ZV-E10 II

Common Causes

  • Lens not fully rotated into the locked position
  • Debris on the lens contacts or camera mount contacts
  • Third-party lens incompatible with current camera firmware
  • Lens adapter not seated correctly (for A-mount or other adapters)
  • Faulty lens communication circuit

How to Fix It

  1. Remove and reattach the lens.

Turn the camera off. Remove the lens by pressing the lens release button and rotating counter-clockwise. Reattach by aligning the dot markers and rotating clockwise until it clicks firmly.

  2. Clean the lens and camera mount contacts.

Use a dry cotton bud to gently clean the gold electrical contacts on the lens rear and the camera body mount. Oxidised contacts cause communication failures.

  3. Update the camera firmware.

Sony regularly adds support for new lenses via firmware updates. A third-party lens that shows Lens Not Attached on older firmware may work after an update. Check sony.com/support for the latest firmware.

  4. Try a different lens.

If a different lens works correctly, the original lens has a fault or incompatibility. If all lenses show the error, the camera body's mount contacts may be damaged.

  5. For adapters: check the adapter is fully seated.

Lens adapters (LA-EA5, Sigma MC-21, etc.) must be locked on both the camera side and the lens side. A partial lock on either side causes Lens Not Attached.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Sony A7 work with all E-mount lenses?

Yes — all Sony FE and E-mount lenses are compatible with Sony A7 series bodies. Third-party E-mount lenses (Sigma, Tamron, Samyang) are also generally compatible with some features. A-mount lenses require the LA-EA5 adapter.
