Steering Warning / EPS Fault

BMW Vehicle

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

BMW steering warning means the electric power steering (EPS) system has detected a fault. Steering still works but assist may be reduced or absent. Restart the engine — a temporary EPS software fault often clears on restart. If the warning persists, the EPS control unit, torque sensor, or power steering module needs diagnosis.

Affected Models

  • BMW 3 Series (F30/G20)
  • BMW 5 Series (F10/G30)
  • BMW X3
  • BMW X5
  • BMW 1 Series (F20/F40)

Common Causes

  • Temporary EPS software fault — clears on restart
  • Battery or voltage issue causing EPS control unit to fault on startup
  • EPS torque sensor fault — sensor measures driver steering effort and can fail
  • EPS motor overheated from extensive full-lock maneuvers
  • BMW iDrive software update causing EPS module communication fault — known issue on some F-series BMWs

How to Fix It

  1. Restart the engine.

Switch off the BMW, wait 30 seconds, and restart. BMW EPS software faults, particularly those triggered by voltage anomalies at startup, typically clear on a restart. If the warning clears and does not return regularly, the fault was transient — but monitor for recurrence.

  2. Check the battery and charging system.

BMW EPS requires stable 12V power — a weak or aging battery causes EPS faults, particularly on cold starts. Have the battery tested with a conductance tester (BMW uses AGM batteries — not a standard load test). Also verify the IBS (intelligent battery sensor) is reading correctly — a failed IBS causes the car to undercharge the battery, leading to voltage-related EPS faults.

  3. Read EPS fault codes.

Use Carly, ISTA, or a BMW-compatible scanner to read EPS/steering module fault codes. BMW EPS codes are in the electric power steering control unit (EPS module) — not accessible with standard OBD-II tools. Codes C04XX series indicate EPS module faults; check for battery voltage codes alongside EPS codes — they often appear together.

  4. Check for iDrive/EPS software update compatibility.

Some F-series BMWs developed EPS warnings after iDrive software updates that introduced communication incompatibilities between the iDrive and EPS modules. A BMW dealer or ISTA-capable technician can check for available EPS module software updates. Flashing the EPS module with the latest software resolves the communication fault.

  5. Have the EPS rack inspected.

If the warning persists and software is up to date, the EPS rack assembly (motor + steering column) may have an internal failure. BMW EPS rack replacement is expensive — get a quote from both a BMW dealer and a specialist workshop. Remanufactured EPS rack assemblies are available for most BMW models at significantly lower cost than new OEM parts.

When to Call a Professional

If the steering warning does not clear after a restart and steering assist remains absent, the EPS control unit or rack assembly may have failed. BMW EPS repairs require ISTA diagnostic access.
