Regenerative Braking Limited

Tesla Electric Vehicle

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Regenerative Braking Limited means the car has reduced or disabled regenerative braking temporarily. This is normal in cold weather (battery too cold) or when the battery is nearly full (nowhere to put the regen energy). The car is safe to drive — just use the brake pedal more.

Affected Models

  • Tesla Model 3
  • Tesla Model Y
  • Tesla Model S
  • Tesla Model X

Common Causes

  • Battery too cold — common on winter mornings
  • Battery above 90% charge — no room to store regen energy
  • Battery preconditioning not complete
  • Battery management system limiting for safety

How to Fix It

  1. If cold: precondition the battery by turning on climate from the app.

Preconditioning warms the battery. After 15-20 minutes, regen gradually returns to full strength.

  2. If battery is full: drive for a few miles.

Once the charge level drops below ~95%, regen re-enables. Charge to 80% daily to avoid this.

  3. Set departure time in the app for daily commutes.

The car preconditions automatically before your departure time. This ensures full regen is available when you leave.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is limited regen dangerous?

No, but the car feels different. One-pedal driving does not work as well. The dashed line on the power bar shows reduced regen. Use the brake pedal normally.

Why does cold weather affect regen?

Cold batteries have higher internal resistance. Pushing energy into a cold battery too fast can damage it, so the car limits regen until the battery warms up.
