Supercharger Not Working / Failed to Charge

Tesla Electric Vehicle

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Tesla Supercharger not working is most often caused by a faulty Supercharger stall (try a different stall), a charge port latch issue, or the car's battery being too hot or too cold for DC fast charging. Move to a different stall first — this resolves the issue in most cases.

Affected Models

  • Tesla Model 3
  • Tesla Model Y
  • Tesla Model S
  • Tesla Model X
  • Tesla Cybertruck

Common Causes

  • Faulty Supercharger stall — the stall itself has a hardware problem, not the car
  • Charge port not fully latched or debris in the charge port
  • Battery temperature out of optimal range — too hot after a long drive or too cold in winter
  • Supercharger site overloaded — power shared between multiple cars at a busy station
  • Tesla account payment method expired or charging issue on the account

How to Fix It

  1. Try a different Supercharger stall.

Individual Supercharger stalls can fail while the rest of the station works normally. Unplug from the current stall, move to a different stall on the opposite side of the row (V3 stalls share power in pairs — V3 is labeled on the stall), and try again. Faulty hardware at the stall is the most common cause of Supercharger failures.

  2. Inspect and clean the charge port.

Open the Tesla charge port (press the charge port door) and inspect for debris, bent pins, or moisture. Use compressed air or a dry cloth to clean any visible debris from the charge port contacts. Bent charge port pins require service center repair — do not attempt to straighten them yourself.

  3. Allow the battery to cool after a long drive.

Tesla batteries get hot during long highway drives — if the battery temperature is too high, the car limits Supercharging speed or prevents it entirely to protect battery health. Park in shade for 15–20 minutes before Supercharging after a long highway run. Tesla pre-conditions the battery for Supercharging when you navigate to a Supercharger on the car's navigation — use this feature to arrive with an optimally tempered battery.

  4. Precondition the battery in cold weather.

Below approximately -10°C, Tesla limits or prevents Supercharging until the battery is warm enough. Navigate to the Supercharger in the Tesla's built-in navigation before arriving — the car will begin warming the battery en route. Arrive with the car in navigation mode to the Supercharger for the fastest possible charging.

  5. Check your Tesla account payment method.

Supercharging requires a valid payment method on your Tesla account for vehicles without free Supercharging credits. Open the Tesla app → your account → Payment Methods and confirm the card on file is valid and not expired. Also check if any charging holds or account alerts appear in the app — an account issue prevents Supercharging on all stations.

When to Call a Professional

If the Tesla consistently fails to charge at multiple different Supercharger stations and charge port cleaning does not help, the on-board charger or charge port assembly may have failed. Contact Tesla service.
