ABS Warning Light

Toyota Vehicle

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The ABS warning light means the anti-lock braking system has detected a fault. Normal brakes still work — only ABS is disabled. Common causes are a dirty wheel speed sensor or low brake fluid.

Affected Models

  • Toyota Camry
  • Toyota Corolla
  • Toyota RAV4
  • Toyota Highlander
  • Toyota Tacoma
  • All Toyota vehicles

Common Causes

  • Wheel speed sensor dirty or failed
  • ABS module fault
  • Low brake fluid level
  • Damaged tone ring on wheel hub
  • Wiring issue to ABS sensor

How to Fix It

  1. Check brake fluid level.

Low fluid triggers the ABS light. Top up to the MAX line with DOT 3 or DOT 4.

  2. Check wheel speed sensors for dirt.

Sensors near the wheel hub get covered in road grime. Clean with a cloth — do not use solvents.

  3. Have the ABS codes read.

A scan tool can identify which specific sensor or component has failed.

  4. Try turning the car off and on.

Temporary sensor glitches sometimes clear with a restart.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive with the ABS light on?

Yes. Normal brakes work fine. Only the anti-lock function is disabled. Drive carefully on slippery roads — wheels may lock during hard braking.

Is the ABS light an MOT/inspection failure?

In many countries/states, yes. The ABS system must be functional to pass inspection.
