Grinder Error

Breville Coffee Machine

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A Breville grinder that jams or makes noise without producing ground coffee is usually blocked by oily bean residue or a foreign object. Empty the hopper and use a grinder cleaning tablet to clear the burrs.

Affected Models

  • Breville Barista Express
  • Breville Barista Pro
  • Breville Oracle
  • Breville Oracle Touch
  • Breville Grind Control

Common Causes

  • Oily or dark-roast beans caking the steel burrs
  • Foreign object (stone, nut, hard seed) jammed between the burrs
  • Grind setting too fine, overloading the motor
  • Coffee bean fragments wedged in the chute after the grinder

How to Fix It

  1. Empty the bean hopper and look for foreign objects.

Remove all beans and look at the bottom of the hopper and the grinder inlet. A stone, nut, or coffee capsule fragment can jam the burrs instantly — check carefully.

  2. Adjust the grind setting to coarser.

A setting that is too fine puts excessive load on the motor. On Breville machines, adjust the grind dial to a coarser position. Only adjust while the grinder is running — do not force the dial when static.

  3. Use a grinder cleaning tablet.

Place grinder cleaning tablets (such as Breville's own cleaning tablets or Urnex Grindz) in the hopper. Run the grinder as if making an espresso. Follow with two or three shots of beans to flush the tablets through.

  4. Clear the chute below the grinder.

Ground coffee can pack and block the chute between the grinder and the portafilter basket. Use a small brush (included with many Breville machines) to clear the chute.

When to Call a Professional

If cleaning tablets and grind adjustment do not restore normal grinding, the grinder burrs may need replacement. Breville service can replace the burr set.
