Steam Wand Blocked
Breville Coffee Machine
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
A blocked Breville steam wand is almost always caused by dried milk residue in the tip. Purge the wand with steam immediately after each use and wipe with a damp cloth. Soak the tip to clear an existing blockage.
Affected Models
- Breville Barista Express
- Breville Barista Pro
- Breville Oracle
- Breville Oracle Touch
- Breville Dual Boiler
- Breville Bambino Plus
Common Causes
- Dried milk residue blocking the steam tip holes
- Milk drawn back into the wand when steam is cut off
- Infrequent cleaning allowing residue to harden inside the wand
- Scale buildup inside the steam wand reducing flow
How to Fix It
-
Purge and wipe the wand immediately after every use.
Right after steaming milk, open the steam valve briefly to purge any milk from the tip, then wipe the wand with a damp cloth. This is the single most effective way to prevent blockages — milk dries hard within minutes.
-
Remove and soak the steam tip.
Unscrew the steam tip from the wand (turn counter-clockwise). Soak it in a small cup of hot water for 15–30 minutes. Use a pin or toothpick to clear each hole in the tip.
-
Soak the wand body in a steam wand cleaning solution.
Fill a jug with hot water and a small amount of milk frother cleaner. Submerge the steam wand (with machine off and unplugged) for 20 minutes, then run a steam purge to flush any loosened residue.
-
Run a descale cycle.
Scale inside the steam circuit restricts flow and reduces steam pressure. If the descaling indicator is showing, complete a full descale cycle — this often restores full steam output.
When to Call a Professional
If soaking and cleaning the tip do not restore full steam flow, a Breville technician can disassemble the wand to clear internal blockages and check the steam valve.
