Add Water When Full
Keurig Coffee Machine
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
The 'Add Water' alert when your reservoir is clearly full almost always means the float sensor inside the reservoir is stuck, or the reservoir is not making proper contact with the machine's water sensor. Removing and firmly reseating the reservoir usually fixes it.
Affected Models
- Keurig K-Slim
- Keurig K-Elite
- Keurig K-Classic
- Keurig K-Supreme Plus
- Keurig K-Duo Essentials
Common Causes
- Float sensor inside the reservoir is stuck in the 'empty' position
- Reservoir is not seated correctly — sensor contact is not made
- Mineral deposits have built up around the float and are preventing it from rising
- Small magnet inside the float has weakened or shifted
- Water was added too quickly and created a bubble under the float
How to Fix It
-
Remove the reservoir and look at the float sensor — a small plastic disc or cylinder inside the reservoir that floats on the water surface.
Pick up the float with your finger and let it drop freely. It should move smoothly up and down. If it feels gummy or stiff, scale has built up around it.
-
Wash the reservoir thoroughly with warm soapy water, paying special attention to the float and its guide channel. Rinse completely.
Dissolved minerals from hard water coat the float guide and prevent the float from rising freely. Washing removes this coating.
-
Refill the reservoir slowly and smoothly — do not pour water in with force. Rapid pouring can trap a bubble under the float, holding it in the low position.
After filling, tap the reservoir gently on the counter to release any trapped bubbles.
-
Reattach the reservoir firmly. Lift it up and press it down once more with both hands to ensure the sensor connection at the base is fully made.
The machine detects the water level through a magnetic sensor at the base of the reservoir connection. If the connection is loose, the sensor reads no water.
-
Power cycle the machine after reseating the reservoir: unplug for 60 seconds, plug back in. The sensor should now read correctly.
The control board sometimes caches an 'empty' reading and needs a reboot to update its sensor reading.
When to Call a Professional
This issue is almost always a sensor or seating issue, not a hardware failure. If cleaning and reseating the reservoir does not fix the alert, contact Keurig support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my Keurig without the removable reservoir?
Some Keurig models have a built-in non-removable reservoir — you fill it from the top. For models with a removable reservoir, you must have it attached for the machine to detect water and allow brewing. Never attempt to bypass the water level sensor — running the pump dry can burn it out.
Will descaling fix the false 'Add Water' alert?
Sometimes, yes. If the scale buildup is on the float guide or inside the reservoir connection port, descaling the machine and cleaning the reservoir will restore normal sensor operation. If the issue is a weakened float magnet or a faulty sensor circuit, descaling will not help — but it is worth trying first since it is free.
