Brew Cycle Stops Early

Keurig Coffee Maker

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A Keurig that stops dispensing before the cup is full usually has a clogged needle or scale build-up partially blocking the water path. Cleaning the needles and descaling restores the full brew volume.

Affected Models

  • Keurig K-Classic
  • Keurig K-Select
  • Keurig K-Elite
  • Keurig K-Supreme
  • Keurig K-Slim

Common Causes

  • Clogged entry or exit needle restricting water flow
  • Scale build-up reducing water throughput
  • K-Cup foil seal not punctured cleanly — partial seal restricting flow
  • Air lock in the pump causing early pressure loss
  • Machine auto-shutoff triggered by a temperature fault

How to Fix It

  1. Clean both needles — the entry needle in the head and the exit needle in the pod holder.

A partially clogged needle restricts flow and causes the machine to dispense only a fraction of the selected brew volume before pressure drops.

  2. Remove the water tank, check for and remove any debris around the inlet valve, and reattach.

Particles or coffee grounds near the inlet valve reduce water flow to the pump. Rinse the bottom of the tank and the inlet area.

  3. Run a descaling cycle if overdue.

Partial scale blockages cause inconsistent brew volumes. Descaling clears the restriction and restores the full selected volume.

  4. Power cycle the machine by unplugging for 5 minutes with the water tank attached.

An air lock causes the pump to lose prime and stop early. A full power cycle with the tank full allows the pump to re-prime on restart.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Keurig only fill half a cup?

A half-cup dispense is almost always a needle blockage or air lock. Clean the exit needle first — this is the most common cause. If the problem only occurs on certain K-Cup sizes, the needle may only be partially blocked.

Can a weak or faulty K-Cup cause a short brew?

Yes — a K-Cup with a damaged foil or a very fine grind can create excessive back pressure and stop the brew early. Try a different K-Cup from a fresh box to rule out the capsule as the cause.
