Brewing Slowly
Keurig Coffee Machine
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Slow brewing in a Keurig is almost always caused by limescale buildup inside the machine narrowing the water lines, or a partially clogged needle. Descaling and cleaning the needle will restore normal speed.
Affected Models
- Keurig K-Classic
- Keurig K-Elite
- Keurig K-Select
- Keurig K-Supreme
- Keurig K-Duo
Common Causes
- Limescale buildup has narrowed the internal water lines
- Needle is partially clogged — water gets through but slowly
- Water filter in the reservoir is clogged and restricting flow
- Machine needs descaling
- Water reservoir inlet screen is partially blocked
- Cold water — very cold water is thicker and flows more slowly
How to Fix It
-
Clean both needles with a straightened paper clip or the Keurig needle cleaning tool. Even a partial blockage dramatically reduces flow rate.
The upper and lower needles control the entry and exit of water through the pod. A partial clog lets water drip rather than flow.
-
Run a descaling cycle. This is the most effective fix for slow brewing caused by scale-narrowed water lines.
Use Keurig descaling solution or a 50/50 vinegar-water mix. After descaling, run 3 full reservoirs of plain water through before brewing coffee.
-
Replace the water filter in the reservoir handle if it has been in use for more than 2 months.
Keurig water filters (the small charcoal filters in the reservoir handle) get clogged over time and restrict water flow into the machine. Replace every 2 months or every 60 tank refills.
-
Use room-temperature water instead of refrigerator-cold water. Very cold water is slightly more viscous and flows more slowly through fine passages.
This will not make a dramatic difference but can help if your tap water is very cold in winter.
-
Run a water-only cycle (no pod): place a large mug, add water to the reservoir, and brew without a K-Cup. Time it — a normal 8oz cycle should take about 60–90 seconds. If it takes over 3 minutes, the machine needs descaling.
This diagnostic step tells you whether the slow brewing is a pod issue or a machine issue. If water-only is slow, the machine needs cleaning.
When to Call a Professional
Slow brewing is almost always a maintenance issue, not a mechanical failure. If descaling and needle cleaning do not restore speed, contact Keurig support.
Frequently Asked Questions
How fast should a Keurig brew normally?
A healthy Keurig should brew an 8oz cup in about 60–90 seconds and a 12oz cup in about 90–120 seconds. If your machine is taking 3–5 minutes per cup, it has significant scale buildup and needs descaling urgently. A machine that is nearly blocked may drip for 5–10 minutes to produce a single cup.
Can slow brewing make my coffee taste different?
Yes. When water trickles through a K-Cup pod very slowly, it over-extracts the coffee and produces a bitter, burnt-tasting cup. Restoring the correct flow rate also restores the correct brew time and flavour. If your Keurig coffee has tasted progressively more bitter over the past few months, slow flow from scale buildup is likely the reason.
