Descale Light On
Keurig Coffee Machine
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
The Keurig descale light means mineral deposits (limescale) have built up inside the machine and it is time to run a cleaning cycle. This is routine maintenance — run the descale cycle and the light will turn off.
Affected Models
- Keurig K-Elite
- Keurig K-Supreme
- Keurig K-Café
- Keurig K-Duo
- Keurig K-Slim
Common Causes
- Keurig's internal counter has reached the descaling threshold (every 3–6 months)
- Hard water has accelerated scale buildup
- Previous descaling cycle was not completed properly
- Machine was reset but descaling counter was not cleared
How to Fix It
-
Buy Keurig descaling solution (from keurig.com, Target, or Amazon) or prepare a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water.
Keurig recommends their own descaling solution. White vinegar works but requires more rinse cycles afterwards to remove the smell and taste.
-
Empty the reservoir, remove any water filter in the reservoir handle, and pour in the full bottle of Keurig descaling solution followed by the same volume of water.
Do not use the water filter during the descaling cycle — it will absorb the descaling solution and be ruined.
-
Place a large mug (at least 500ml) under the spout. On machines with a descale mode: press the 8oz and 12oz buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds to enter descale mode. On older machines without descale mode, simply run brew cycles until the reservoir is empty.
In descale mode the machine automatically runs an extended cycle. On manual mode, let each cycle complete fully before starting the next.
-
Once the reservoir is empty, refill it with plain fresh water and run 3 full brew cycles (no pod) to rinse the machine completely.
Three rinse cycles are needed to fully flush all descaler residue. Do not skip rinse cycles or your coffee will taste like vinegar or chemicals.
-
The descale light should turn off automatically after a complete cycle. If it does not, re-enter descale mode and run another full cycle.
On some models the light only clears when the machine detects that the full programmed volume of descaling solution has been pushed through. An incomplete cycle will not clear the light.
When to Call a Professional
Descaling is a home maintenance task — no technician needed. If the descale light remains on after completing a full descaling cycle, contact Keurig support.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I descale my Keurig?
Keurig recommends descaling every 3–6 months depending on how often you use the machine and how hard your water is. The machine will remind you with the descale light when it is time — so you do not need to track it yourself. If you use the machine multiple times per day, plan for quarterly descaling.
Can I use CLR or other household descalers in my Keurig?
Keurig specifically says not to use CLR or any descaler not intended for coffee machines. CLR contains chemicals that can damage the machine's internal rubber seals and may leave residues unsafe for food contact. Stick to Keurig descaling solution, white vinegar, or food-grade citric acid.
