Error Code 2
Keurig Coffee Machine
Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
Keurig Error Code 2 means the machine detected a problem with the heating element or water temperature sensor. This is a serious error but a power cycle and descaling fix it in most cases before needing a replacement.
Affected Models
- Keurig K-Elite
- Keurig K-Café
- Keurig K-Supreme Plus
- Keurig K-Duo Plus
- Keurig K-Select
Common Causes
- Heating element has scaled up so severely that it cannot reach target temperature
- Water temperature sensor is faulty or reading incorrectly
- Machine overheated and the thermal fuse tripped
- Electrical fault in the heating circuit
- Machine was powered on with an empty reservoir — boiled dry
How to Fix It
-
Unplug the machine immediately. Leave it unplugged for at least 30 minutes to let the heating element and thermal fuse cool completely.
A tripped thermal fuse will not reset until the machine is cool. Trying to restart a hot machine that showed Error 2 will immediately trigger the error again.
-
Plug the machine back in and turn it on. If it starts heating normally (light changes from orange to green), the thermal cutoff was the cause and has now reset.
If Error 2 appears again within the first minute, the issue is not just an overheating event — the heating element or sensor has a fault.
-
Perform a full descaling cycle. Heavy scale on the heating element is the most common cause of Error 2. The scale acts as an insulator and prevents the element from transferring heat to the water.
Use Keurig descaling solution. After the cycle, run 3 full reservoirs of plain water. Then turn off, unplug for 10 minutes, and try again.
-
Ensure the water reservoir is full before powering on. Never turn on a Keurig with an empty reservoir — the pump will push air through the heating element, which can overheat and fail.
Always keep the reservoir at least one-third full before powering on the machine.
-
If the error persists after descaling and cooling, contact Keurig support. Provide your model number (printed on the bottom of the machine) and describe the steps you have already tried.
Keurig will often ship a replacement machine directly — keep your original packaging if the machine is fairly new.
When to Call a Professional
If descaling and a power cycle do not clear Error 2, the heating element or temperature sensor has likely failed. Contact Keurig support at keurig.com/support — this is a warranty repair. Do not continue using the machine if Error 2 persists — a failed heating element can be a fire risk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Error Code 2 covered by Keurig warranty?
Yes, if your machine is within the 1-year warranty period. Keurig will typically replace the machine rather than repair it — their support is known for being quick and generous. Have your receipt or order confirmation ready when contacting support.
Can I repair the heating element myself?
Technically possible but not recommended. Keurig heating elements operate at mains voltage and the machine is designed to be difficult to open. Unless you are a qualified electrician with appliance repair experience, the risk of injury or creating a fire hazard is not worth it when a warranty replacement is available.
