Not Brewing
Keurig Coffee Machine
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
A Keurig that powers on but will not brew is most often caused by a water reservoir that needs to be reseated, a clogged needle, or a machine that needs to be descaled. These are all fixable at home.
Affected Models
- Keurig K-Slim
- Keurig K-Elite
- Keurig K-Classic
- Keurig K-Supreme
- Keurig K-Duo
Common Causes
- Water reservoir is not seated correctly or is empty
- K-Cup needle is clogged with coffee grounds
- Machine needs descaling and has restricted or locked brewing
- Brew size selected is larger than the water available in the reservoir
- Machine is in a fault or error state
- The K-Cup holder has debris preventing the lid from closing properly
How to Fix It
-
Remove the water reservoir, empty it, rinse it, refill with fresh cold water to the MAX line, and click it firmly back onto the machine.
The reservoir must seat fully — you should feel or hear it click into place. If it is even slightly misaligned, the water inlet valve will not open.
-
Open and fully close the K-Cup holder. Check that the pod is sitting correctly and that the lid locks down completely.
If the lid does not latch, the machine's safety interlock prevents brewing from starting. Press the lid down until it clicks.
-
Clean the needle: Keurig sells a needle cleaning tool, or you can use a straightened paper clip. Push it gently into the needle hole in the top of the K-Cup holder and move it in a circle to clear grounds.
There are two needles — one in the top lid and one at the bottom of the K-Cup holder. Both can get clogged. Clean both.
-
Run a water-only cycle: remove the K-Cup pod, place a large mug under the spout, and start a brew cycle. If water flows normally, the machine is fine and the problem was a bad pod.
If water still does not flow during a water-only cycle, the blockage is in the machine rather than the pod.
-
Power cycle the machine: turn it off using the power button, unplug it from the wall, wait 60 seconds, plug back in, and turn on.
Many Keurig error states clear with a full power cycle. The 60-second wait allows capacitors to discharge and the control board to fully reset.
-
If the descale light is on, run a descaling cycle before attempting to brew. Some Keurig models restrict brewing when descaling is overdue.
Use Keurig descaling solution or plain white vinegar. Fill the reservoir, run the descale cycle, then rinse with 3 full reservoirs of plain water before brewing.
When to Call a Professional
If the machine still will not brew after all troubleshooting steps, contact Keurig support at keurig.com/support or call 1-866-901-BREW (2739). Keurig offers a 1-year warranty on most machines.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Keurig make noise but produce no coffee?
A Keurig that is loud but produces nothing is usually experiencing an airlock or a clogged needle. Try the water-only cycle first — if water flows with no pod, the needle is clear and a pod may have been the problem. If no water flows either, perform the needle cleaning and descaling steps.
How do I reset a Keurig to factory settings?
On most Keurig models: open and close the pod holder, then press the power button 3 times quickly. On K-Supreme and newer touch-screen models: go to Settings > Factory Reset. A factory reset clears all settings and error states but does not fix mechanical clogs — you still need to clean the needle physically.
