Not Turning On

Keurig Coffee Machine

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A Keurig that will not turn on is almost always a power supply issue — tripped outlet, faulty power cord, or the machine's own auto-off feature. Check the outlet and power cord first before assuming the machine is broken.

Affected Models

  • Keurig K-Slim
  • Keurig K-Elite
  • Keurig K-Classic
  • Keurig K-Supreme Plus
  • Keurig K-Mini

Common Causes

  • Wall outlet has no power or the circuit breaker tripped
  • Power cord is not plugged in fully or is damaged
  • Machine turned itself off via the auto-off timer
  • Machine overheated and thermal protection has triggered
  • Power surge damaged the control board
  • Machine was moved and the power switch was accidentally turned off

How to Fix It

  1. Test the wall outlet with another device. If the other device also has no power, check your home's circuit breaker panel.

Kitchen outlets are frequently on the same circuit as other high-draw appliances. If the breaker tripped, resetting it (flip to OFF then back to ON) will restore power.

  2. Check the power cord at both ends — at the machine and at the wall socket. Ensure it is fully inserted at both ends.

A power cord that looks plugged in but is slightly loose will not supply power. Push both ends firmly.

  3. Press the power button once firmly. Some Keurig models have an auto-off timer (the default is 2 hours after the last brew) that turns the machine off completely.

There is no indicator light when the machine is in auto-off — it looks completely dead. A single press of the power button wakes it.

  4. If the machine was recently heavily used and felt very hot, unplug it for 30 minutes to let it cool, then try again.

Keurig has a thermal cutoff that prevents electrical damage if the machine overheats. It resets automatically after cooling.

  5. Try a different wall outlet — ideally one in a different room or on a different circuit.

If the machine powers on in a different outlet, the issue is with the original outlet or that circuit, not the Keurig.

When to Call a Professional

If the machine has power and is cool but still will not turn on after a reset, contact Keurig support at keurig.com/support. Keurig offers a replacement program for machines that fail within the warranty period.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Keurig have an auto-off feature?

Yes. Most Keurig models have an auto-off feature that powers down the machine after a set period of inactivity (usually 2 hours by default). You can adjust or disable auto-off in the machine settings. On touch-screen models, go to Settings > Auto Off Time. On button models, check your manual for the auto-off toggle.

My Keurig stopped working after a power outage — what should I do?

Power outages often cause power surges when electricity is restored, which can blow a machine's internal fuse or damage the control board. Unplug the Keurig during a power outage (or use a surge protector). If the machine was on during the outage and now will not power on, contact Keurig support — it may need repair or replacement.
