Blinking Lights / Light Patterns

Nespresso Coffee Machine

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Nespresso machines use LED light patterns to communicate status and errors instead of a screen. The most important ones: steady orange = descaling needed, fast orange blink = machine needs resetting, slow orange blink = empty water tank, green = ready to brew.

Affected Models

  • Nespresso Essenza Mini
  • Nespresso Pixie
  • Nespresso Citiz
  • Nespresso Inissia
  • Nespresso Vertuo series

Common Causes

  • Machine in standby or warm-up — normal behaviour
  • Descaling alert triggered
  • Water tank empty
  • Machine error state — needs reset
  • Descaling mode active
  • Capsule head open or not latched

How to Fix It

  1. Steady green light — machine is ready.

A steady green light means the Nespresso is heated and ready to brew. Insert a capsule and press the coffee button. No action is needed.

  2. Pulsing white or green light — warming up.

A slow pulse while turning on means the machine is heating the water to brew temperature. This takes 15–30 seconds. Wait for the steady light before inserting a capsule.

  3. Orange steady light — descaling needed.

A steady orange light means the descaling alert has been triggered. The machine will continue to brew, but performance and lifespan are affected. Run a descaling cycle as soon as possible using the official Nespresso descaler. After descaling, the orange light clears and the machine returns to green.

  4. Fast orange blink — factory reset needed.

Rapidly blinking orange indicates the machine has entered an error state. Perform a factory reset: with the machine on and the head closed, press and hold the coffee button for 5 seconds (Original series) or follow the Vertuo model-specific reset procedure in the manual. The machine will blink and restart — the orange light should change to green.

  5. Alternating red-green or rapid red blink — overheating or internal fault.

Alternating red and green, or fast red blinking, indicates an overheating condition or a hardware fault. Unplug the machine, wait 30 minutes for it to cool, and try again. If the fault persists after cooling, contact Nespresso customer service — the machine may need to be inspected or replaced.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset my Nespresso machine?

Factory reset procedure for most Original Nespresso machines: with the machine on and capsule head closed, press and hold the Lungo button for 5 seconds until the light blinks 3 times. For Vertuo machines: open and close the head, then press and hold the button for 7 seconds until you see 5 rapid blinks, then release. The machine resets to factory settings. Note: a factory reset does not erase programmed cup volumes — those are separate user preferences.
