Capsule Not Piercing
Nespresso Coffee Machine
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
If your Nespresso capsule is not being pierced, the injection needle inside the capsule head is almost certainly blocked or damaged. Cleaning the needle with the Nespresso cleaning tool or a straightened paper clip usually fixes this in under 2 minutes.
Affected Models
- Nespresso Essenza Mini
- Nespresso Citiz
- Nespresso Inissia
- Nespresso Pixie
- Nespresso Creatista
Common Causes
- Injection needle blocked with dried coffee grounds or oils
- Foreign object or capsule fragment lodged in the needle area
- Wrong capsule type used — third-party capsule dimensions differ slightly
- Capsule head mechanism is not closing fully due to buildup
- Needle is bent or broken from a previous jam
How to Fix It
-
Turn off and unplug the machine. Open the capsule lever fully and look inside the head with a torch (phone light works well).
You are looking for the small metal needle that points downward into the capsule. It may have dried coffee around or inside it.
-
Use the Nespresso cleaning tool (included with most machines) to clear the needle: insert it into the head and push it up and down 5–6 times.
If you do not have the cleaning tool, a straightened paper clip works. Insert it gently into the needle opening and move it around to dislodge any blockage. Do not push hard — you could damage the needle.
-
Rinse the capsule area: hold the machine head over the sink and pour a small amount of warm water through the needle opening.
This softens and flushes any dried coffee grounds that the cleaning tool loosened.
-
Check that you are using the correct capsule format. Original Line machines use Original capsules; Vertuo machines use Vertuo capsules — the two are not interchangeable.
Forcing an incompatible capsule can jam the mechanism and damage the needle. Verify the capsule type on the side of the box.
-
Plug the machine back in and run a hot water rinse cycle (no capsule) to flush any debris through the system.
Then insert a fresh capsule and test. You should hear and feel the capsule being pierced when the lever is pressed down.
When to Call a Professional
If the needle is visibly bent or broken, contact Nespresso support at nespresso.com. Do not attempt to straighten or replace the needle yourself — the machine will need professional service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use third-party capsules in my Nespresso machine?
Yes — many third-party brands make compatible capsules for Original Line Nespresso machines. However, some off-brand capsules are slightly thicker or have a harder foil top, which can strain the needle over time. For Vertuo machines, only Nespresso-branded Vertuo capsules will work due to the barcode-reading mechanism.
How do I know if the capsule was pierced correctly?
When a capsule pierces correctly, you will see coffee start to flow from the spout within 5–10 seconds of starting the brew cycle. If water comes out but it is completely clear with no colour, the capsule was not pierced and the water bypassed it. If no water comes out at all, both the top and bottom piercing may have failed.
