Capsule Not Recognised / Capsule Error
Nespresso Coffee Machine
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Nespresso 'capsule not recognised' is most common on Vertuo machines, which use barcode scanning to identify the capsule. A dirty capsule barcode, the wrong capsule type, or a used capsule in the machine causes this error.
Affected Models
- Nespresso Vertuo series
- Nespresso VertuoPlus
- Nespresso VertuoNext
- Nespresso Vertuo Pop
Common Causes
- Dirty or smudged barcode on the Vertuo capsule rim
- Used capsule still inside the machine (machine scans used barcodes as errors)
- Wrong capsule type — Vertuo capsules in an Original machine or vice versa
- Counterfeit or unofficial capsule with unreadable barcode
- Barcode scanner inside the machine dirty
- Capsule inserted in the wrong orientation
How to Fix It
-
Remove any used capsule from the machine.
Open the machine head and check there is no used capsule still inside. Nespresso Vertuo machines have an automatic used-capsule ejection system — occasionally a capsule does not fully eject. Remove any capsule, close and reopen the head, and try again with a fresh capsule.
-
Wipe the capsule barcode.
Nespresso Vertuo capsules have a barcode around the foil rim. Smudges, fingerprints, or coffee stains on the barcode prevent the scanner from reading it. Gently wipe the foil rim of the capsule with a dry cloth and reinsert.
-
Check you are using the correct capsule type.
Nespresso Original and Vertuo capsules are NOT interchangeable. Original capsules are flat-topped cylinders. Vertuo capsules are dome-topped with a barcode on the foil rim. Inserting the wrong type will not work — the machine head will not close properly or will reject the capsule.
-
Clean the capsule scanner.
Open the Vertuo machine head. Inside, you will see a small transparent window — the barcode scanner. Wipe it gently with a damp cotton swab and dry it. Coffee residue on the scanner lens causes consistent capsule reading failures.
-
Use official Nespresso capsules.
Nespresso Vertuo machines are specifically designed to work with official Nespresso capsules that have a registered barcode. Third-party compatible capsules may have barcodes that the scanner cannot read, or may not trigger the correct brew programme. For Original series machines, third-party capsules work fine as no barcode scanning is involved.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Nespresso Vertuo keep rejecting capsules?
Repeated capsule rejection on Nespresso Vertuo machines is almost always a dirty barcode scanner or a smudged capsule barcode. Open the machine head and clean the small transparent scanner window inside with a damp cotton swab. Also wipe the foil rim of the capsule. If the problem only occurs with certain batches of capsules, the printing quality on that batch may be sub-standard — contact Nespresso for a replacement.
