Capsule Stuck
Nespresso Coffee Machine
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
A stuck Nespresso capsule is usually caused by a deformed or swollen capsule that expanded during brewing and got wedged in the capsule holder. Never use sharp tools to force it out — the safe removal method below works in most cases.
Affected Models
- Nespresso Essenza Mini
- Nespresso Citiz
- Nespresso Pixie
- Nespresso Inissia
- Nespresso Vertuo Next
Common Causes
- Capsule swelled or deformed during brewing and got wedged
- Third-party capsule with slightly different dimensions is stuck
- Capsule holder has scale or coffee residue buildup that grips the capsule
- Capsule was inserted incorrectly and seated at an angle
- The ejection mechanism is clogged with dried coffee
How to Fix It
-
First, unplug the machine for safety. Never try to remove a stuck capsule while the machine is on.
The capsule area can hold pressurised steam immediately after brewing. Wait 5 minutes after the last brew before attempting removal.
-
Open the lever fully — push it down as far as it will go. This is further than the normal brewing position and activates the ejection mechanism.
Many people do not push the lever all the way down. The ejection only happens at full extension — a partially opened lever leaves the capsule inside.
-
With the lever fully open, tilt the machine forward over a sink or bin. Gravity often drops the capsule out without any other intervention.
Hold a container underneath before tilting — there may be residual water or coffee in the capsule.
-
If the capsule is still stuck, use a rubber kitchen glove or a rubber jar-opener pad to grip the capsule and pull it straight out gently.
The rubber grip provides much better traction than bare fingers. Pull straight out, not at an angle, to avoid breaking the capsule.
-
After removing the capsule, rinse the capsule area with warm water and run a no-capsule hot water cycle to flush any capsule fragments or debris.
Check the area for any torn foil or capsule fragments before brewing again — debris left inside can block the needle.
When to Call a Professional
If the capsule cannot be removed without applying significant force, stop and contact Nespresso support. Forcing a stuck capsule can break the ejection mechanism and turn a minor issue into a costly repair.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did the capsule get stuck in the first place?
During brewing, pressure inside the capsule can reach 15–19 bar. Some capsules — especially off-brand ones — can swell slightly under this pressure and wedge against the walls of the capsule holder. Using official Nespresso capsules virtually eliminates this problem, as they are precisely sized for the machine.
Can I use pliers to remove a stuck capsule?
No. Pliers can crush the capsule, tearing the foil and scattering hot wet grounds inside the machine. Always use the rubber-grip method — it is gentler and just as effective. If the capsule absolutely will not budge, contact Nespresso support rather than risk damaging the ejection mechanism.
