Coffee Too Watery
Nespresso Coffee Machine
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Weak, watery Nespresso coffee is almost always caused by using the Lungo setting instead of Espresso, or a cup size that has been reprogrammed too large. It can also be caused by a damaged or old capsule.
Affected Models
- Nespresso Essenza Mini
- Nespresso Citiz
- Nespresso Pixie
- Nespresso Vertuo Next
- Nespresso Inissia
Common Causes
- Wrong button pressed — Lungo (110ml) instead of Espresso (40ml)
- Cup size has been accidentally reprogrammed to a larger volume
- Capsule is old, damaged, or has been exposed to air
- Using a mild intensity capsule when a stronger one is preferred
- Needle is partially blocked and water is bypassing the capsule
- Machine needs descaling — scale disrupts the brewing pressure
How to Fix It
-
Make sure you are pressing the Espresso button, not the Lungo button. Lungo uses more than twice the water and produces a much weaker cup.
On most Original Line machines: the left or single-cup button = Espresso (40ml), the right or larger button = Lungo (110ml). On Vertuo machines the size is determined by the capsule.
-
Reset your cup size to the factory default. Hold both buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds until the lights flash 3 times.
If someone accidentally reprogrammed the espresso button to dispense 150ml instead of 40ml, every cup will taste like diluted dishwater. A reset returns the volumes to normal.
-
Try a new, sealed capsule from a freshly opened sleeve. Old or exposed capsules lose their flavour and produce a noticeably weaker cup.
Nespresso capsules have a best-before date. Check the date on the sleeve. Even within date, a capsule that has been out of its sleeve for a long time will taste flat.
-
Choose a higher intensity capsule. Nespresso intensity ratings go from 1 (mild) to 13 (very strong). If you want a bold cup, choose intensity 8 or above.
Intensity is not the same as caffeine content — it refers to the roast level and body of the coffee.
-
Descale the machine if overdue. Scale buildup can reduce brewing pressure, which in turn extracts less flavour from the capsule.
After descaling, the first one or two cups may taste slightly different as the system normalises. Brew and discard one cup before your morning coffee.
When to Call a Professional
Watery coffee is never a reason to call a technician. If the steps above do not improve the flavour, try a new pack of capsules before assuming the machine is at fault.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Nespresso capsule makes the strongest coffee?
For Original Line machines, the strongest capsules are Kazaar (intensity 12), Ristretto (intensity 10), and Roma (intensity 8). For Vertuo machines, look for capsules labelled Double Espresso or the ones with an intensity of 9 or above. Strong flavour comes from the correct cup size too — always use an espresso or ristretto size for the most concentrated result.
Should I use filtered water in my Nespresso?
Yes, if you live in a hard-water area. Filtered water reduces limescale buildup, extends the time between descaling cycles, and can noticeably improve coffee taste. Britta-filtered or bottled mineral water (not distilled) is ideal. Avoid softened water (from a water softener) as it can damage the machine over time.
