Descaling Needed

Nespresso Coffee Machine

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The descaling alert means mineral deposits (limescale) have built up inside your machine from the water it has processed. This is completely normal — all coffee machines need descaling regularly. Run a descaling cycle and the alert will clear.

Affected Models

  • Nespresso Essenza Mini
  • Nespresso Citiz
  • Nespresso Pixie
  • Nespresso Vertuo Next
  • Nespresso Vertuo Pop

Common Causes

  • 300 capsules have been brewed since the last descaling
  • 3 months have passed since the last descaling
  • Machine is used in a hard-water area and scale builds up faster
  • Descaling was started but not completed — machine remained in alert state
  • Machine reset wiped the descaling counter and alert triggered again

How to Fix It

  1. Buy a Nespresso descaling kit (available from nespresso.com, supermarkets, and Amazon) or use citric acid powder dissolved in water (1 tablespoon per 500ml).

Do not use white vinegar — it leaves a persistent sour taste and can damage rubber seals over time.

  2. Empty the drip tray and place a large container (at least 1 litre) under the coffee spout.

A large jug or bowl works perfectly. The descaling cycle pushes all the water in the tank out through the machine, so you need plenty of capacity.

  3. Enter descaling mode: on most models, hold the button(s) for 3–7 seconds until the light flashes in a specific pattern. Refer to your model's manual for the exact entry sequence.

On Essenza Mini: hold the button for 7 seconds. On Vertuo Next: hold the button and lever together for 3 seconds, then confirm. On Pixie: press both buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds.

  4. Follow the on-screen or light-guided steps — the machine will pump the descaling solution through in two phases.

Phase 1 pushes the descaling solution through all internal pipes. Phase 2 is a rinse with fresh water. Do not interrupt the cycle once it has started.

  5. When the cycle finishes, refill the tank with fresh water and run one more rinse cycle to flush any remaining descaler taste.

Some users run two rinse cycles for extra peace of mind. The machine exits descaling mode automatically when the cycle completes.

  6. Brew and discard one cup of plain hot water (no capsule) before making your first coffee after descaling.

This final rinse ensures no descaler residue remains in the spout.

When to Call a Professional

Descaling is a home maintenance task — you do not need a technician. If after completing a full descaling cycle the alert light does not clear, contact Nespresso at nespresso.com/support.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I ignore the descaling alert?

Ignoring descaling will cause limescale to accumulate inside the machine. First, your coffee will taste bitter and weaker. Then flow will slow to a trickle. Eventually, the pump will have to work so hard against the blockage that it overheats and burns out — turning a free maintenance task into an expensive repair.

How long does descaling a Nespresso machine take?

A full Nespresso descaling cycle takes about 20–30 minutes from start to finish, including both the descaling phase and the rinse phase. Have a 1-litre container ready and set aside half an hour — it is mostly hands-off once you start the cycle.
