Descaling Not Completing

Nespresso Coffee Machine

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A Nespresso descaling cycle that stops midway is usually caused by an empty water tank, an incorrect container under the spout, or not following the button sequence exactly. Refill the tank and restart the descaling mode from the beginning.

Affected Models

  • Nespresso Essenza Mini
  • Nespresso Pixie
  • Nespresso Citiz
  • Nespresso Vertuo
  • Nespresso Expert

Common Causes

  • Water tank ran empty during the descaling cycle
  • Container under the spout too small and overflowed, stopping the machine
  • Descaling mode accidentally exited by pressing the wrong button
  • Machine timed out due to inactivity between steps
  • Severe scale blockage requiring multiple descaling cycles

How to Fix It

  1. Refill the water tank completely with fresh water and descaling solution mixed as directed.

The Nespresso descaling cycle requires a full tank of water. If it ran empty mid-cycle, refill and restart the process from the beginning.

  2. Place a container of at least 1 litre capacity under the spout.

A small cup will overflow during the descaling cycle. Use a large container — at least 1 litre — to catch the full volume of water and solution.

  3. Follow the descaling button sequence precisely from the start.

Each Nespresso model has a specific button combination to enter and confirm descaling mode. Consult the manual for your model. Pressing the wrong button during the cycle exits the mode and you must restart.

  4. After the descaling solution cycle completes, run the rinse cycle with fresh water as instructed.

Descaling is a two-phase process: descaling solution first, then a plain water rinse. Do not skip the rinse — descaling solution left in the machine will affect taste.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Nespresso descaling take?

A full Nespresso descaling cycle including the rinse phase takes approximately 20-30 minutes. Do not interrupt the cycle once started — an incomplete descaling can leave residue in the machine.

Can I use vinegar instead of Nespresso descaling solution?

Nespresso strongly recommends against using vinegar — it can damage internal rubber seals and leave a taste that is very difficult to rinse out. Use only Nespresso descaling solution or a Nespresso-approved equivalent.
