Gurgling Noise
Nespresso Coffee Machine
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
A gurgling or sputtering noise from a Nespresso machine during brewing is usually caused by air in the water circuit, a nearly empty water tank, or scale build-up partially blocking the flow path. Filling the tank and running a rinse cycle usually resolves it.
Affected Models
- Nespresso Essenza Mini
- Nespresso Pixie
- Nespresso Citiz
- Nespresso Vertuo
- Nespresso Inissia
Common Causes
- Air trapped in the water circuit — common after the tank ran empty
- Water tank not seated correctly on the base
- Limescale build-up partially blocking the water path
- Normal pump sound — some models are louder than others
- Capsule not pierced correctly — forcing the pump to work harder
How to Fix It
-
Fill the water tank completely and reattach it firmly to the machine.
Air enters the pump circuit when the tank runs dry. Refilling and running two rinse cycles (no capsule) purges the air.
-
Remove and reseat the water tank to ensure the inlet valve is fully engaged.
A tank that is not fully clicked into place lets air seep into the water line, causing gurgling and inconsistent flow.
-
Run two full rinse cycles without a capsule to purge any air from the system.
Press the brew button without a capsule. The first cycle may gurgle and sputter — this is normal as air is pushed out. The second cycle should flow smoothly.
-
If gurgling persists, check if descaling is overdue.
Partial scale blockages cause the pump to work harder, producing a louder, irregular sound. Descaling every 3-6 months prevents this.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is some noise normal from a Nespresso machine?
Yes — Nespresso machines have a high-pressure pump that makes a consistent humming or buzzing sound during brewing. Loud gurgling, sputtering, or irregular sounds are not normal and indicate air in the system or a blockage.
My Nespresso gurgles only at the end of the brew — is that a problem?
A brief gurgle at the very end of brewing is normal — it is the pump drawing the last water from the capsule and clearing residual pressure. Gurgling throughout the entire brew cycle is not normal.
