Half Cup Only
Nespresso Coffee Machine
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
If your Nespresso is only making half a cup, the cup size has been accidentally reprogrammed, or limescale is restricting flow and stopping the brew cycle early. Reprogramming the cup size or descaling will fix it.
Affected Models
- Nespresso Essenza Mini
- Nespresso Citiz
- Nespresso Pixie
- Nespresso Vertuo Next
- Nespresso Inissia
Common Causes
- Cup size has been accidentally reprogrammed to a smaller volume
- Limescale buildup is slowing flow and triggering an early stop
- The machine is in espresso mode instead of lungo mode (or vice versa)
- A capsule type intended for espresso is being used with lungo settings
- Water tank ran low mid-brew and the machine stopped automatically
How to Fix It
-
Check the water tank is full before brewing — if the tank runs low during a brew cycle the machine stops automatically.
Even if the tank looks half-full, the float sensor may have triggered a low-water cutoff. Top it up and try again.
-
Reprogram the cup size: on most Nespresso models you can hold the brew button during a brew cycle to set a new volume. Release when the cup is full.
On Original Line machines (Essenza, Citiz, Pixie): press and hold the Lungo button until your desired volume is dispensed, then release — the new volume is saved. On Vertuo machines, cup sizes are fixed by the capsule barcode and cannot be changed.
-
Factory reset the cup sizes: on most Original Line machines, hold both buttons simultaneously for 3–5 seconds until the lights blink 3 times, then release. This restores default volumes.
Default volumes: Espresso = 40ml, Lungo = 110ml. After resetting, test with a fresh capsule.
-
If the volume is correct after a reset but gradually gets smaller over time, descale the machine. Scale buildup slows water flow and causes the machine to stop prematurely.
Descaling restores the internal flow rate to normal, which allows the machine to dispense the full programmed volume.
-
Make sure you are pressing the correct button. Nespresso machines have separate espresso (short) and lungo (long) buttons. Pressing the espresso button gives approximately 40ml; lungo gives approximately 110ml.
On machines with a single button, one press gives espresso and two quick presses give lungo — check your manual.
When to Call a Professional
This issue almost never requires professional service. If reprogramming and descaling do not restore full cup volume, contact Nespresso support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make my Nespresso produce more coffee than the default setting?
Yes. On Original Line machines, you can reprogram any button to dispense up to the maximum the machine allows (usually around 200–220ml). Hold the desired button during brewing and release when you have the volume you want. Note: using a capsule designed for espresso and pulling a very long shot will make the coffee taste extremely thin and weak.
Why does my Vertuo machine keep making different sizes?
Vertuo machines read a barcode on the capsule rim to determine the correct cup size, temperature, and spin speed. If the barcode is damaged, dirty, or the capsule is not locked correctly, the machine may default to an incorrect size. Always use undamaged capsules and lock the head fully before brewing.
