Leaking Water

Nespresso Coffee Machine

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Nespresso leaks usually come from one of three places: the capsule area (damaged capsule seal), the water tank connection (cracked or unseated tank), or the drip tray (overflowing). Most leaks are easy to diagnose and fix without any tools.

Affected Models

  • Nespresso Essenza Mini
  • Nespresso Citiz
  • Nespresso Vertuo Next
  • Nespresso Lattissima
  • Nespresso Creatista Plus

Common Causes

  • Drip tray is full and overflowing
  • Water tank is cracked or the rubber seal at the bottom is damaged
  • Capsule head gasket is worn out and no longer seals around the capsule
  • Machine was overfilled and water is dripping from the tank overflow
  • Internal tube has come loose or cracked (requires service)
  • Capsule was damaged or deformed before insertion, causing a poor seal

How to Fix It

  1. Empty the drip tray — it fills up faster than most people expect and overflows onto the counter.

The drip tray collects both drips from the spout and any overflow from the capsule area. Empty it daily if you brew multiple cups per day.

  2. Remove the water tank and inspect it for cracks. Look especially at the base and corners. Also inspect the rubber inlet seal at the bottom of the tank connection point inside the machine.

A cracked tank or a displaced rubber seal will cause a steady drip from the back or side of the machine. Replacement tanks are available from Nespresso and Amazon.

  3. Inspect the capsule head seal — open the lever and look at the rubber ring around the inside of the brewing head. It should be soft, unbroken, and evenly seated.

A hardened, cracked, or deformed gasket will not seal properly around the capsule and will cause coffee to leak out around the sides of the head during brewing.

  4. Check that you are not overfilling the water tank past the MAX line.

Overfilling causes water to back-flow and drip from unexpected places. Always fill to the MAX line only.

  5. Test the machine with a fresh capsule and a paper towel placed under and around the machine to identify the exact location of the leak.

Watching where the wet spot appears on the paper towel will tell you precisely which component is leaking and help you decide if it is a DIY fix or a service call.

When to Call a Professional

If water is leaking from the bottom of the machine or from a point you cannot see, stop using it immediately and contact Nespresso support. Internal leaks can damage the electronics and are a warranty repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a leaking Nespresso dangerous to use?

A drip tray overflow or a leaking water tank is not dangerous — just inconvenient. However, if water is leaking near the base of the machine where the electronics are, stop using it immediately. Water and electrical components do not mix. Unplug the machine and contact Nespresso support before using it again.

Can I replace the water tank seal myself?

Yes. The rubber inlet seal (a small O-ring or flat gasket) at the base of the water tank connection can be replaced at home. Replacement seals are inexpensive and available on Amazon. Take a photo of the old seal before removing it so you know the correct orientation when fitting the new one.
