Making Noise Not Brewing
Nespresso Coffee Machine
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
When your Nespresso pump is loud but nothing comes out, the machine almost certainly has an airlock or a severe limescale blockage. The pump is working hard but cannot push water through. This is fixable at home with a descaling cycle.
Affected Models
- Nespresso Essenza Mini
- Nespresso Citiz
- Nespresso Pixie
- Nespresso Inissia
- Nespresso Vertuo Plus
Common Causes
- Airlock in the pump — air is trapped and water cannot flow
- Severe limescale blockage in the internal water lines
- Clogged injection needle blocking water from reaching the capsule
- Water tank is empty or the inlet valve is blocked
- Pump is running dry and is beginning to wear out
How to Fix It
-
Remove the water tank, shake it gently to break up any air bubble at the outlet, refill with fresh cold water, and reseat firmly.
An air bubble blocking the tank outlet is the quickest fix and costs nothing.
-
Prime the pump: with no capsule in the machine, run 4–5 short brew cycles in a row.
Each cycle tries to push air out and pull water in. You may hear a change in the pump sound — a lower, steadier hum means water has entered the pump.
-
Run a full descaling cycle. Heavy limescale can reduce the bore of internal tubes to almost nothing, making the pump scream but producing no flow.
Use the Nespresso descaling solution or citric acid. After descaling, run 2 full tanks of plain water through the machine.
-
Clean the injection needle using the Nespresso cleaning tool or a paper clip, then run a no-capsule hot water cycle.
A blocked needle is a common cause of this symptom — the pump pushes water but it has nowhere to go.
-
If the machine is new or has been stored, open the capsule head and look for any packing material or plastic tab that may have been left inside from manufacturing.
This is rare but has been reported for new Nespresso machines shipped with a protective insert inside the capsule head.
When to Call a Professional
If the machine has been descaled and airlocks cleared but still produces no flow despite loud pumping, the pump may be failing. Contact Nespresso support — pump replacement is covered under warranty.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the loud noise damaging my machine?
Running the pump dry for extended periods can wear it out faster. Do not run the machine repeatedly if you know the water tank is empty — always ensure there is water before trying to brew. A few test cycles to clear an airlock is fine; running it dry for minutes at a time will shorten the pump life.
Why does this happen after the machine has been sitting unused for a while?
When a Nespresso machine sits unused for several weeks, the water in the pump and internal lines evaporates. This leaves the pump primed with air instead of water, creating an airlock. The fix is the priming technique above — running the pump several times to draw fresh water from the tank.
