Milk Frother Not Working

Nespresso Coffee Machine

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

A Nespresso Aeroccino that does not froth is almost always caused by milk residue coating the magnetic whisk, or using the wrong type of milk. Clean the whisk and jug thoroughly and use full-fat cold milk for best results.

Affected Models

  • Nespresso Aeroccino 3
  • Nespresso Aeroccino 4
  • Nespresso Lattissima
  • Nespresso Expert with Milk
  • Nespresso Creatista

Common Causes

  • Milk residue coating the magnetic whisk and reducing spin speed
  • Wrong milk type — UHT, plant-based, or skimmed milk froths poorly
  • Milk too warm before frothing — must start cold for foam
  • Frother overfilled — milk above the max fill line prevents frothing
  • Whisk not seated correctly on the magnetic base

How to Fix It

  1. Remove and clean the magnetic whisk thoroughly with warm soapy water.

Milk protein films build up on the whisk and reduce its spin effectiveness. Clean after every use for consistent frothing.

  2. Use cold full-fat or semi-skimmed dairy milk.

Cold milk (straight from the fridge) froths far better than warm milk. Full-fat dairy milk produces the best foam. UHT, oat, and skimmed milks produce significantly less foam.

  3. Do not fill milk above the lower max line (for foam) or upper max line (for hot milk).

Overfilling prevents the vortex from forming. Use the lower max line for foam, the upper for hot milk without foam.

  4. Ensure the whisk clicks firmly onto the magnetic base inside the jug.

The whisk must be properly seated on the magnetic coupling in the base of the jug. If it is even slightly off-centre, it will not spin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Nespresso Aeroccino heat the milk but not froth it?

Heating without frothing means the whisk is spinning too slowly or not at all. Clean the whisk thoroughly and check it is properly seated. If the magnet is damaged, the whisk will spin weakly and only heat the milk.

Which Nespresso Aeroccino whisk do I use for foam vs hot milk?

The Aeroccino 3 has one whisk — use the spring attachment for foam, no spring for hot milk. The Aeroccino 4 has two separate whisks: the flat disc for hot milk, the spring whisk for foam.
