No Coffee / Not Dispensing
Nespresso Coffee Machine
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
A Nespresso not dispensing coffee is most often caused by a blocked needle (the piercing pin is clogged with coffee grounds), an empty water tank, or a capsule not being inserted correctly. Cleaning the needle with the Nespresso cleaning capsule or a pin resolves most no-coffee issues.
Affected Models
- Nespresso Vertuo series
- Nespresso Original series
- Nespresso Essenza
- Nespresso Pixie
- Nespresso Citiz
- Nespresso Lattissima
Common Causes
- Needle (piercing pin) blocked with coffee grounds or dried coffee
- Water tank empty or not seated correctly
- Capsule not properly inserted or wrong type for the machine
- Machine needs descaling — limescale blocking the flow
- Air lock in the pump — no water reaching the boiler
- Machine in descaling mode — coffee button behaviour changes
How to Fix It
-
Check and refill the water tank.
Remove the water tank, empty any remaining water, and refill with fresh cold water. Reattach the tank firmly — it must click into place on most models. Ensure the water tank lid is open (on Original series machines the lid must be raised for water to flow).
-
Clean the needle with a Nespresso cleaning capsule.
Nespresso sells a Cleaning Capsule (orange, included with some machines) specifically for unblocking the needle. Insert it as you would a normal capsule and press the coffee button. The capsule pushes water through the needle system to flush out dried coffee grounds. If you don't have a cleaning capsule, carefully insert a pin or toothpick into the capsule piercing hole (visible when the head is open) and move it gently to break up any blockage.
-
Bleed air from the pump (prime the pump).
If the machine was stored with an empty tank, air may have entered the pump — it hums but no water flows. Fill the tank, open the hot water or steam nozzle (if present), and run a hot water cycle without a capsule. This draws water through the system and removes the air lock. Repeat 2–3 times until water flows freely.
-
Check the machine is not in descaling mode.
When the descaling cycle is active, the machine does not brew coffee — it runs water through without a capsule. On most Nespresso models, descaling mode is indicated by a steady or slow-blinking orange light. If the machine entered descaling mode accidentally, complete the cycle with just water (no capsule, no descaler) or consult the manual to exit the mode.
-
Run a hot water cycle without a capsule.
Open the capsule head, leave it empty, and run the hot water programme if available, or press the coffee button. If water flows freely without a capsule but not with one, the capsule type may be incompatible (Vertuo and Original capsules are not interchangeable) or the capsule is defective.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Nespresso hum but produce no coffee?
Humming without coffee output means the pump is running but water is not reaching the brew head. The two most common causes are an air lock (pump drew air from an empty tank) and a severely blocked needle. Prime the pump by running hot water cycles with an empty head. If water still won't flow, the needle or internal water path is blocked — a thorough descaling or needle cleaning is needed.
