Not Brewing
Nespresso Coffee Machine
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
A Nespresso that powers on but will not brew is usually caused by an empty or unseated water tank, a capsule that was not inserted correctly, or a machine that needs descaling. These are all fixable at home.
Affected Models
- Nespresso Essenza Mini
- Nespresso Vertuo Next
- Nespresso Citiz & Milk
- Nespresso Pixie
- Nespresso Lattissima
Common Causes
- Water tank is empty, incorrectly seated, or the float sensor is stuck
- Capsule was not inserted properly or the lever is not fully closed
- Machine needs descaling and has locked out brewing
- Capsule holder is clogged with old coffee grounds
- Machine is in a fault state and needs a reset
- The machine is in standby or energy-saving mode and did not wake fully
How to Fix It
-
Remove the water tank, rinse it out, refill with fresh cold water, and push it firmly back until it clicks.
Even if the tank looks full, if it is not seated correctly the water level sensor cannot detect water and the machine will refuse to brew.
-
Open and close the capsule lever completely — make sure a fresh capsule is seated properly before closing.
On Vertuo models, the capsule must be locked in with a turn. On Original Line models, insert the capsule and push the lever all the way down until it latches.
-
Check whether the descaling alert is active (blinking light). If so, run a descaling cycle before brewing will be allowed again.
Some Nespresso models lock out brewing entirely when descaling is overdue. The machine is not broken — it just needs descaling first.
-
Remove the capsule holder and rinse it under warm running water to clear any dried coffee residue.
Over time, fine coffee grounds and oils accumulate in the capsule area and can block the water injection needle. A quick rinse often restores normal flow.
-
Reset the machine: turn it off, then hold the brew button for 5 seconds until the light blinks, then release and wait for it to stabilise.
This clears any internal fault state. The exact reset button combination varies by model — check your manual or the Nespresso website for your specific model.
-
Run a hot water cycle with no capsule inserted to flush the system.
Place a large cup under the spout, ensure the tank is full, and start a brew cycle without a capsule. On Original Line machines this rinses the lines. On Vertuo machines use the hot water or rinse function if available.
When to Call a Professional

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Nespresso machine make a sound but no coffee comes out?
If you hear the pump running but no coffee comes out, the most likely cause is a blocked water path — either a clogged needle, scale buildup in the internal lines, or an airlock in the pump. Try running two or three hot water cycles (no capsule) to push through the blockage. If that does not work, a full descaling cycle will clear mineral deposits from the lines.
My Nespresso light is green / steady but it still will not brew — why?
A steady green light usually means the machine is ready and waiting for you to start a brew cycle. If pressing the button does nothing, check that the lever is fully closed and latched. On Vertuo models, the head must be locked (turned to the lock position) before brewing starts.
