Nespresso Vertuo machines use a barcode on the capsule rim to set brew parameters. If the capsule is not detected, the barcode is damaged or the reader is dirty. Clean the barcode reader lens inside the head and use a genuine Nespresso capsule.

Clean the barcode reader lens inside the capsule head with a dry cotton swab.
The small optical lens inside the head reads the barcode on the capsule rim. Coffee splatter or dust on this lens causes misreads. Clean gently — do not use liquids.

Inspect the capsule rim barcode for damage, tears, or smudges.
The barcode must be intact for the reader to identify the capsule type. A torn or smudged rim barcode cannot be read — discard the capsule and use a fresh one.

Ensure you are using genuine Nespresso Vertuo capsules.
Vertuo machines require the proprietary barcode system. Many third-party capsules are not compatible with VertuoLine machines — check the packaging explicitly states Vertuo compatibility.

Close the head firmly and ensure it locks into position.
The capsule must be fully seated and the head locked down for the barcode scan to occur. A partially closed head will not trigger the reader.
