Not Turning On

Nespresso Coffee Machine

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A Nespresso that will not turn on is usually a power supply issue — a tripped wall outlet, a faulty power cord, or the machine's internal thermal fuse tripping after overheating. Check the outlet and let the machine cool before concluding it is broken.

Affected Models

  • Nespresso Essenza Mini
  • Nespresso Citiz
  • Nespresso Pixie
  • Nespresso Inissia
  • Nespresso Vertuo Next

Common Causes

  • Wall outlet has no power or the circuit breaker tripped
  • Power cord is damaged or not fully plugged in
  • Machine overheated and the internal thermal cutoff has tripped
  • Machine is in auto-off mode after 9 minutes of inactivity — press the button once to wake it
  • Internal control board has failed (requires service)
  • Power surge damaged the machine

How to Fix It

  1. Check the wall outlet: plug something else into the same socket (a phone charger or lamp) and confirm it has power.

This rules out the socket immediately. If other devices also have no power, check your circuit breaker panel.

  2. Unplug the Nespresso power cord and inspect it for damage — kinks, cuts, or bent pins at the plug. Plug it back in firmly.

A partially inserted plug is a surprisingly common cause of a machine that appears completely dead.

  3. If the machine was recently used and felt hot, unplug it and leave it for 30–60 minutes to cool completely, then try again.

Nespresso machines have a thermal cutoff fuse that trips if the machine overheats. It resets automatically once the machine cools — no manual reset needed.

  4. Try pressing the button once firmly — the machine may simply be in auto-off mode.

Most Nespresso machines turn off automatically after 9 minutes of inactivity. A single button press wakes them up. There is no light when in auto-off mode, which makes the machine appear completely dead.

  5. Try a different power outlet, ideally on a different circuit or in a different room.

If the machine powers on in a different outlet, the original outlet or that circuit has an issue.

When to Call a Professional

If the machine has power, is not overheated, and still will not turn on after a reset, contact Nespresso support. A dead control board or blown internal fuse is not a DIY repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Nespresso have a warranty on machines?

Yes. Most Nespresso machines come with a 2-year warranty. If your machine will not turn on and is under 2 years old, contact Nespresso at nespresso.com/warranty or call 1-800-562-1465. Nespresso often replaces faulty machines quickly — they want you buying capsules.

Can a power surge kill a Nespresso machine?

Yes. A power surge can blow the internal fuse or damage the control board. If your machine stopped working immediately after a storm or power outage, a surge is likely the cause. Plug your Nespresso (and all small appliances) into a surge-protected power strip to prevent this in future.
