Red Light Blinking
Nespresso Coffee Machine
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
A blinking red light on your Nespresso almost always means one of two things: the machine needs descaling (mineral buildup inside), or the water tank is empty or not seated properly. Both are easy to fix at home with no tools.
Affected Models
- Nespresso Essenza Mini
- Nespresso Citiz
- Nespresso Pixie
- Nespresso Inissia
- Nespresso Vertuo Pop
Common Causes
- Descaling is overdue — mineral scale has built up inside the machine
- Water tank is empty or not clicked into place correctly
- Machine has overheated and needs to cool down
- A capsule is stuck in the capsule holder
- The machine has been left idle and entered an alert state
- Internal error during brewing — needs a reset
How to Fix It
-
Check the water tank first — remove it, refill it with fresh cold water, and click it firmly back into place.
The tank must click positively into its slot. If it is even slightly out of position, the machine thinks it is empty and will not brew.
-
If the tank is full, check whether the machine is in descaling mode — a slow blinking red light (about once per second) specifically means descaling is needed.
Run a full descaling cycle using Nespresso descaling solution or a citric-acid descaler. Fill the tank with the descaler mixed with water, place a large container under the spout, and follow the descaling procedure in your model's manual.
-
If the light blinks rapidly (several times per second), the machine may have overheated. Turn it off, unplug it, and leave it for 30 minutes to cool.
Nespresso machines have a thermal cutoff that triggers if they overheat. After cooling, plug back in and try again.
-
Open the capsule lever and check for a stuck or damaged capsule. Remove any capsule present, close the lever, and try powering on again.
A capsule that did not eject properly can block the mechanism and trigger a fault light.
-
Perform a factory reset: with the machine off, hold the button down for 5 seconds until the light flashes, then release.
The exact reset sequence varies by model. On Essenza Mini: hold the button for 5 seconds. On Vertuo models: press and hold the button and lever together for 3 seconds. Check your manual for your exact model.
-
After any fix, run a plain water rinse cycle (no capsule, just water in the tank) before brewing your first coffee.
This flushes any descaler residue or debris from the internal lines and ensures your coffee tastes normal.
When to Call a Professional
If the red light continues blinking after descaling, refilling the tank, and performing a reset, contact Nespresso support at nespresso.com or call 1-800-562-1465. Nespresso offers a free machine swap program if your machine is under warranty.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I descale my Nespresso machine?
Nespresso recommends descaling every 3 months or after every 300 capsules, whichever comes first. If you live in a hard-water area (common in the US Southwest, UK, and many European cities), you may need to descale more frequently — every 6–8 weeks. The machine will remind you with a blinking light when it is time.
Can I use vinegar instead of Nespresso descaling solution?
Nespresso does not recommend vinegar — it can leave a residue and a strong taste that is very hard to rinse out completely. Citric acid powder dissolved in water (1 tablespoon per litre) is a widely used, safe, and inexpensive alternative that rinses out cleanly. For best results, use the official Nespresso descaling kit.
