Water Not Flowing
Nespresso Coffee Machine
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
When a Nespresso pump runs but no water comes out, there is almost always a blockage somewhere — either an airlock in the pump, mineral scale clogging the lines, or a blocked injection needle. All three are fixable at home.
Affected Models
- Nespresso Essenza Mini
- Nespresso Citiz
- Nespresso Pixie
- Nespresso Vertuo Next
- Nespresso Inissia
Common Causes
- Airlock in the pump — air got trapped and the pump cannot prime itself
- Mineral scale (limescale) has narrowed or blocked the internal water lines
- The capsule injection needle is clogged with dried coffee
- Water tank has an air bubble preventing the inlet valve from opening
- Machine has not been used for a long time and internal seals have dried out
- Descaling is overdue and flow has reduced to almost nothing
How to Fix It
-
Remove the water tank, tap it firmly on the counter to dislodge any air bubble, refill with fresh water, and reseat it.
Air bubbles near the tank outlet prevent water from entering the machine. A firm tap breaks the bubble free.
-
Try priming the pump: open the machine head with no capsule, hold a cup under the spout, and press the brew button. Repeat 3–4 times.
Running the pump repeatedly without a capsule will eventually draw water past an airlock. You may hear a sputtering sound — that is normal and means air is being pushed out.
-
Inspect and clean the injection needle. On Original Line machines, there is a small needle inside the capsule head — use the Nespresso cleaning tool or a straightened paper clip to gently clear any blockage.
A blocked needle stops water from entering the capsule entirely. Coffee oils and dried grounds are the most common cause.
-
Run a full descaling cycle. Heavy limescale buildup is the number-one cause of poor or zero water flow in Nespresso machines.
Use Nespresso descaling solution or citric acid mixed with water. Follow the descaling procedure in your manual. After descaling, run 2–3 full tanks of plain water through the machine to rinse.
-
If the machine has not been used for weeks or months, soak the water tank connection area: remove the tank, pour a small amount of water into the tank socket inside the machine, wait 5 minutes, then reattach the tank and try again.
Seals and inlet valves can dry out during long periods of inactivity. Moistening the area helps reseal the connection.
When to Call a Professional
If water still does not flow after descaling and clearing airlocks, the pump itself may be failing. Contact Nespresso support at nespresso.com — pump replacement is a common warranty repair.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my Nespresso has an airlock?
If the pump makes a loud buzzing or grinding sound but absolutely no water comes out — not even a drip — an airlock is the most likely cause. By contrast, limescale tends to cause a slow trickle rather than zero flow. The prime-the-pump fix (running the pump several times with no capsule) almost always clears an airlock within 2–3 attempts.
Will descaling fix a no-flow problem?
Yes, in most cases. Limescale gradually narrows the internal water tubes until flow stops completely. A descaling cycle dissolves the mineral deposits and restores full flow. If you have never descaled your machine, this is very likely the cause of your problem.
