Grinder Not Working
Philips Saeco Coffee Machine
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
A Philips Saeco grinder that spins but produces no ground coffee is usually blocked by oily bean residue or a foreign object. Empty the hopper and use a grinder cleaning tablet to clear the burrs.
Affected Models
- Philips 2200 Series
- Philips 3200 Series
- Philips 4300 Series
- Philips 5400 Series
- Saeco GranBaristo
- Saeco Xelsis
Common Causes
- Oily or dark-roast beans caking the ceramic burrs
- Pre-ground coffee or powder in the bean hopper clogging the grinder chute
- Foreign object (stone, hard seed) jammed in the grinder
- Grind setting too fine creating excessive resistance
How to Fix It
-
Empty the bean hopper and check for foreign objects.
Remove all beans and look carefully at the bottom of the hopper and the grinder inlet for stones, hard seeds, or other non-coffee debris. Even a single small stone can jam the grinder permanently.
-
Adjust the grind to a coarser setting.
A setting that is too fine can overload the grinder motor. Adjust one step coarser before adding beans. Only adjust the grind setting while the machine is grinding — do not turn it when empty.
-
Use a grinder cleaning tablet.
Pour the recommended number of grinder cleaning tablets into the empty hopper and run a grind cycle. The tablets absorb oily residue and help clear the burrs. Run a few cycles with beans afterwards to flush the tablets through.
-
Switch to lighter-roast, less-oily beans.
Oily dark-roast beans are the leading cause of grinder blockages in Philips Saeco machines. Medium-roast beans with lower oil content are recommended for regular use.
When to Call a Professional
If a grinder cleaning tablet and adjusting the grind setting do not resolve the fault, a Philips technician can disassemble and clean or replace the grinder burrs.
